If you feel tired, bloated, foggy, stuck, or just simply “off” and want to resolve the physical symptoms you are currently experiencing, focus on opening up your detoxification pathways.
Why?
Well, supporting your body’s detox pathways helps to reduce the overwhelming toxic load so that you can feel lighter, clearer, balanced, and energized again.
What Are “Detox Pathways”?
The human body has four main channels of elimination—the kidneys, the colon, the lungs, and the skin—that are crucial for maintaining overall health:
The Urinary System
The urinary system eliminates waste products, toxins, and excess substances from the body through urine. The kidneys filter the blood, removing waste and excess water, which is then excreted through the ureters, stored in the bladder, and expelled as urine.
The Gastrointestinal (GI) System
Also known as the digestive system, it eliminates waste and undigested food through bowel movements. After nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine (if they can be absorbed), the remaining waste travels through the large intestine and is eliminated as feces.
The Respiratory System
The respiratory system removes carbon dioxide and other gaseous waste products produced during cellular respiration. Oxygen is taken in through the lungs during inhalation, and carbon dioxide is expelled during exhalation.
The Integumentary System
This system includes the skin, which plays a role in elimination through sweating. Sweating helps regulate body temperature and also eliminates certain waste products and toxins.
When these channels are blocked, toxins, debris, and waste will recirculate and accumulate, leading to the physical symptoms you’re currently experiencing.
Proper functioning of these pathways is essential to achieve optimal health and vitality.
Focus On The Biggest Channel — The Digestive System
The biggest channel of elimination within the body is the digestive system, which is responsible for processing and eliminating waste through bowel movements.
Your bowel movements are the gateway to understanding the current state of your gut microbiome, and thus, your overall health.
The Bristol Stool Chart helps determine what a healthy bowel movement looks like based on shape and consistency, reflecting transit time through the colon.
Types 3 and 4 on the Bristol Stool Chart are considered ideal, healthy stools.
You should ideally:
Go to the bathroom 2–3 times per day (yes, you heard that right — per day!) with ease.
Have brown stool (unless you eat a lot of greens or beets).
Avoid straining or pain while passing a bowel movement.
Have complete bowel movements that feel satisfactory to you.
Barely require any wiping afterward.
Not regularly experience bloating, gas, or other digestive issues.
Your first and most important goal in your cleansing journey should be to open up your detoxification pathways, develop a healthy functioning bowel, and eliminate 2–3 times per day (Types 3 or 4 on the Bristol Stool Chart) without strain or difficulty.
How to Open Your Detox Pathways
So, how do you open up these detox pathways efficiently and effectively?
The Urinary System
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and loading up on water-rich foods like fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and their raw cold-pressed juices.
The Digestive System
Focus on eating minimally processed, nutrient-dense, fiber-rich, enzyme-rich, plant-based whole foods. Fiber feeds your good gut bacteria, strengthens your microbiome, and acts like an “intestinal broom” to clear built-up toxic waste matter.
Complement a high-fiber eating routine with cleansing modalities like enemas or colonics as needed.
The Respiratory System
Develop a consistent breathwork practice and practice deep breathing whenever possible. This helps your lungs effectively expel carbon dioxide and supports optimal oxygenation.
The Integumentary System
Sweat regularly through daily movement, whether it’s hot yoga, HIIT, cardio, walking, hiking—really anything you enjoy.
Add hyperthermic conditioning (deep sweating) with an infrared sauna, steam room, traditional sauna, and/or hot bath.
Get direct sunlight exposure whenever possible to support healthy sweating and vitamin D synthesis.
Remember to hydrate deeply, nourish your gut with fiber-rich whole foods, breathe intentionally, and sweat efficiently to open up your detox pathways and restore balance within your body.
