Before we dive in, if you want a real read on what your fatigue is actually telling you, take my free Energy Audit before reading. It takes 2 minutes and will make everything below much more personal.
Are you feeling tired right now as you read this?
Well, you don’t just have “low energy”.
If you’re dragging through the day, relying on caffeine, crashing mid-afternoon, or waking up exhausted even after a full night of sleep, even when you’re doing “all the right things”, this is for you.
And before you assume:
it’s just stress
it’s getting older
it’s your thyroid
it’s because you need more coffee
or that this is “just how life feels now”
Let me gently interrupt that narrative.
Low energy is common.
But, it is not normal.
And, it is almost never because your body “can’t produce energy.”
It’s usually because something is blocking it.
Most people chase stimulation instead of solving the bottleneck, trying new adaptogens, powders, peptides, nootropics, IV drips, or the latest longevity stack hoping to feel better.
But, energy doesn’t come from adding more.
It comes from removing what’s suppressing it.
Here are the 10 most common root causes I see in clients who feel tired despite doing everything “right”.
1. Your Detox Pathways Are Sluggish
If your body cannot eliminate efficiently, it will simply not generate abundant energy.
Cellular energy production slows down tremendously when waste isn’t properly cleared.
Fatigue is often a clearance issue, not a sleep issue.
2. You’re Mobilizing More Than You’re Eliminating
Fasting, juicing, intense workouts, and supplements meant to “detox” can all be very supportive in the right context.
But, without proper drainage, these can recirculate toxins instead of removing them from the body, which can make things worse instead of better.
That will then create internal friction, which can feel like exhaustion.
3. Your Blood Sugar Is Quietly Unstable
Even very “clean” diets can be too light, too sweet, or too irregular to support mitochondrial output.
Energy requires stability.
Without it, the body constantly compensates, and you will absolutely feel the dips.
4. Your Nervous System Thinks You’re Under Threat
This is a big one. When the brain perceives chronic stress, it prioritizes survival over performance.
Energy production is then intentionally down-regulated as a result.
The body shifts resources toward protection and repair instead of output, even if that stress is subtle or long-standing.
5. Your Mitochondria Are Under-Fueled
You simply just cannot make energy without:
minerals
amino acids
oxygen
proper thyroid signaling
Many people are unknowingly extremely depleted in the very inputs required to produce ATP.
6. You’re Living Against Your Hormonal Rhythm
Women (especially!) are not designed to operate at the same intensity every day of the month.
Ignoring infradian biology forces the body to compensate, often with fatigue.
During the luteal and menstrual phases in particular, the body is naturally shifting toward repair, hormone metabolism, and inward energy, not peak output, and pushing against that physiology can feel like major burnout instead of productivity.
7. Inflammation Is Redirecting Your Resources
If your immune system is constantly activated (from gut issues, toxins, infections, or stress), energy will get diverted away from daily function.
The body is allocating resources toward defense and inflammation instead of vitality and performance.
Over time, this creates a low-grade energy drain that no amount of sleep or caffeine can fully override.
8. Your Liver Is Completely Overloaded
The liver is responsible for processing hormones, toxins, and metabolic waste.
When it’s overwhelmed and overburdened, energy production can very easily take a back seat.
9. You’re Not Eating Enough to Support Energy Production
This is incredibly common in people trying to eat “clean”.
If you’re undereating protein, minerals, and overall fuel, the body reads this as scarcity.
And, when the body senses scarcity, it conserves energy instead of producing it.
You can’t build strong metabolism, stable blood sugar, or mitochondrial output without enough nourishment.
You need to eat enough to signal safety.
10. You’re Eating Too Many “Slow-Exit” Foods and Not Enough “Quick-Exit” Foods
Not all foods move through the body the same way.
Some digest, absorb, and clear efficiently, supporting energy.
Others require far more digestive effort, sit longer in the gut, and slow elimination.
When too much of the diet is made up of dense, slow-moving foods, the body has to divert energy toward digestion instead of production.
So, it’s about creating the right balance so that the body can clear efficiently while still being nourished.
Why You Can’t “Push” Your Way to Better Energy
Energy is not something you force.
It’s something your physiology naturally allows when:
detox pathways are open
nutrients are available
stress signals are low
and the body trusts that it’s safe to generate output
Real work to build and maintain energy usually isn’t about adding, but rather about clearing interference and fixing the underlying terrain.
If you’ve been feeling tired despite doing everything “right”, your body isn’t broken.
It’s just asking for a different approach.

If this resonated, I’d love to know: what does your low energy actually feel like right now? (Mid-afternoon crashes, waking up tired, needing caffeine to function, brain fog, feeling "wired but exhausted," all of the above?) Let me know in the comments. I read and reply to every response.
And, if you’re ready to address the actual terrain rather than layer more inputs onto a system that hasn’t been cleared, I’m currently taking a very limited number of new 1:1 coaching clients. Book a consultation here.

The clearance versus accumulation framework for fatigue is something I come back to constantly in practice. People assume they need more stimulation — more caffeine, more supplements, more workouts — when what they actually need is better waste removal. The lymphatic and glymphatic systems do not get the attention they deserve in wellness optimization. Fasting, adequate hydration, and sweating are the boring basics that make everything else work better.
