I’m hosting a free 60-minute live (and recorded) Detox Masterclass on Tuesday, September 8 on how to actually address your underlying terrain. If you want the full framework I use with clients, save your spot here.
Most people don’t fail at detox because they’re doing the wrong things.
They fail because they’re doing them in the wrong order.
I’ve been doing this work for years, and there are things I wish someone had told me at the beginning.
Before I wasted time, money, and energy trying to clear deeper layers without opening the exits first, before I tried to optimize a system that wasn’t ready to receive anything, and before I understood that the body has an order of operations and you cannot skip it.
Here’s everything I know now.
The Foundational Layers
1. You can’t detox what you can’t eliminate.
If your colon isn’t moving, nothing upstream is clearing. This is step one…always.
2. You can’t detox without minerals and hydration.
The lymphatic system runs on electrolytes. Bile is mostly water. Phase II liver detoxification depends on minerals. Most people are chronically under-mineralized and chronically dehydrated, and don’t know it because plain water alone isn’t enough. Minerals come before everything else.
3. The body does not detox in fight-or-flight.
Detox happens in a parasympathetic state, not a sympathetic one. A chronically stressed body shunts blood away from the liver, slows digestion, stalls bile flow, and tells the lymphatic system to stand down. You can run every single protocol in the world, and if you’re in fight-or-flight, none of it lands. Stress is a detox blocker most protocols don’t address.
4. Sleep is when detox actually happens.
The glymphatic system clears the brain. The liver runs its deepest work between 1 and 3 AM. Hormone reset, cellular repair, and DNA maintenance do not happen during the day. Chronic short sleep means chronic incomplete detox. Optimize the night, and the day takes care of itself.
5. Sunlight isn’t just for vitamin D.
It anchors the circadian rhythm that runs every detoxification pathway in your body. Morning light sets cortisol, evening melatonin, and the entire 24-hour cycle of repair and clearance. Indoor humans are dysregulated humans.
The Drainage Sequence
6. Drainage has a sequence.
Drainage and the colon first, then the gut, then the liver, then the deeper burden. Skip the sequence, and you’re not detoxing. You’re redistributing.
7. Bile is the exit ramp.
The liver does the processing, while bile carries the processed toxins out. If bile isn’t flowing, and in most people it isn’t, especially women, post-pill, post-gallbladder, post-low-fat-diet, then the toxins your liver just processed sit there or get reabsorbed. Move the bile, or nothing leaves.
8. Your lymph has no pump.
It moves through muscle contraction, deep breathing, and gravity. A sedentary body has a stagnant lymph system, no matter what supplements you’re taking. Move the lymph, or it doesn’t move.
The Deeper Burden
9. Parasites are way more common than people realize.
Most people have never done a parasite cleanse, but most people need one. Parasites disrupt gut integrity, deplete nutrients, drive inflammation, and impair detox pathways. And, they rarely show up on conventional stool tests.
10. Mold is massively under-diagnosed.
If you’ve lived in a water-damaged building or worked in a damp environment and your health never fully recovered, mycotoxins may still be circulating in your body. They are neurotoxic, immunosuppressive, and directly impair mitochondrial function.
11. Chelating heavy metals before drainage is open is the most dangerous thing you can do in detox.
Heavy metals live in fat tissue, brain tissue, and bone. Mercury, lead, aluminum, arsenic, cadmium. They are real and serious. But pulling them out of storage before the exits are open is how people end up sicker than they started. Neurological symptoms, fatigue crashes, brain fog that lasts months. Open the colon, the liver, the lymph, and the bile first, THEN mobilize. Never the reverse.
The Principles
12. The liver is doing far more than you think.
It processes, metabolizes, and clears hormones, filters toxins, produces bile, metabolizes fat, and runs two separate detoxification pathways simultaneously. Most livers are congested before people even start.
13. Supplements don’t work in a congested system.
You can have the best protocol in the world and it will land flat if the terrain isn’t ready to receive it. Clear first, then optimize second.
14. The gut is upstream of almost everything.
Hormones, skin, mood, immunity, energy, and thyroid function are all downstream of gut integrity and absorption. You cannot out-supplement a gut that isn’t absorbing. You cannot fix hormones in a gut that isn’t clearing estrogen.
15. The skin is a secondary elimination organ.
When it’s breaking out, rashy, or dull, your primary pathways are backed up and the skin is compensating. Don’t treat the skin. Open drainage instead.
16. Symptoms are not the problem. They are the signal.
Fatigue, brain fog, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, skin issues, and weight that won’t move are not separate conditions requiring separate treatments. They are the body communicating that the terrain is congested.
17. Detox isn’t an event. It’s a practice.
The body accumulates over years. Clearing takes time, sequencing, and consistency. It’s not a 3-day juice cleanse.
The Reframes
18. Healing reactions are real, and they’re a sign you went too deep too fast.
They’re not a sign that the detox is “working”. Go slower, and open the exits first.
19. You will feel worse before you feel better.
That’s normal. It’s also the reason most people stop too soon.
20. The body is always trying to heal.
It just needs the right conditions and the right order of operations.
Everything I teach comes back to this.
If you want more than a list, if you want the actual framework I use with clients to identify and address the terrain underneath, join me live on Tuesday, September 8 for my free 60-minute Detox Masterclass. It’s recorded, so if you can’t make it live, the replay is available for 48 hours. Save your spot here.
I’d love to know: which one of these have you been doing in the wrong order? Let me know in the comments. I read and reply to every response.
If you are ready to actually resolve the terrain underneath, this is the exact work I do with clients. I’m currently taking a very limited number of new 1:1 coaching clients heading into September. The first step is a 45-minute Client Intake call where we map your full picture and figure out together whether the work is the right fit for where you are. Book your free Client Intake call.
