If you’ve been dealing with persistent skin issues, like acne, dryness, rashes, dermatitis, eczema, or psoriasis, and nothing seems to work, it’s time to stop blaming your skin.
And before you think, “Okay… but should I even read this?” Trust me, I really get it.
I had terrible skin and stubborn acne for years. You can read my full journey here.
Nothing actually changed until I stopped chasing surface fixes and started healing from the inside out instead of trying to heal from the outside in.
My skin didn’t start clearing until I focused on my gut, hormones, detox pathways, and overall internal terrain.
That’s when everything finally shifted.
Because you see…
Your skin actually isn’t the problem here.
It’s the messenger.
Most people are taught to treat skin issues from the outside in, with topicals, facials, lasers, microneedling, prescriptions, antibiotics, hormonal contraception, or harsh “anti-acne” routines.
But, your skin doesn’t malfunction randomly.
It always reflects what’s happening inside your body.
If your internal systems are congested, inflamed, overburdened, or overwhelmed, your skin will be one of the first places that shows it.
Here are the four most common root causes I see in clients who’ve “tried everything” and are still struggling.
1. Gut Imbalances (This Is the Big One)
Your gut and your skin are deeply connected.
When digestion is impaired or the gut terrain is imbalanced, toxins and inflammatory byproducts cannot exit the body efficiently, and your skin will step in as a backup detox pathway.
This is why so many chronic skin issues don’t respond to topical treatments. The problem isn’t actually even on the surface.
Common gut-related contributors to skin issues include:
Candida + yeast overgrowth
H. pylori + other bacterial infections
Parasites + pathogenic bacteria
Low stomach acid
Leaky gut + increased intestinal permeability
Dysbiosis (imbalanced gut microbiome)
Poor bile flow + fat digestion
Food sensitivities + intolerances
History of antibiotics or antimicrobial use
Slow gut motility + constipation / sluggish elimination (this is a big one)
One of the most important indicators of skin health is elimination.
If you’re not having 2-3 easy, complete bowel movements per day (YES, I said per day), your detox pathways are likely blocked.
That means that:
Hormone metabolites recirculate
Toxins build up
Inflammation rises
And, your skin eventually tries to compensate and takes the hit
Acne, rashes, eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, and dull skin are often the body saying: “I can’t get this out through the gut, so I’ll try to get it out through the skin.”
Clear skin starts with a clear gut.
2. Hormonal Imbalances
Most skin issues are blamed on hormones, but hormones don’t just “act up” out of nowhere.
They become imbalanced when both the colon and the liver can’t clear them properly.
Common patterns I see with my clients include:
Estrogen dominance
Excess androgens
Poor estrogen clearance
Hormone recirculation due to constipation
Birth control masking symptoms instead of resolving them
If estrogen isn’t being eliminated efficiently, it gets reabsorbed into circulation, and skin symptoms flare.
This is why suppressing symptoms with hormonal contraception often “works”…
until it just doesn’t anymore.
Because the root congestion still remains.
3. Nutrient Deficiencies
Your skin requires very specific nutrients to regenerate, repair, and protect itself.
Deficiencies, often caused by poor absorption, gut inflammation, or chronic stress, commonly include:
Zinc
Vitamin A
B vitamins
Iron
Magnesium
Omega-3s
You can eat “clean” and still be deficient in such nutrients when:
Your digestion is weak
Your gut lining is compromised
Your liver is overburdened
Skin that won’t heal, scars slowly, stays inflamed, or breaks out cyclically is often undernourished at the cellular level.
More supplements won’t fix this if absorption is completely impaired.
4. An Overwhelming Toxic Load
We are exposed to more toxins today than at any point in human history.
And, your skin is directly affected by:
Heavy metals
Mold + mycotoxins
Pesticides + herbicides
Plastics + endocrine disruptors
Environmental chemicals
Poor indoor and outdoor air quality
Contaminated drinking + shower water
EMFs + chronic oxidative stress
Synthetic fragrances
Household cleaning chemicals
Personal care + beauty products containing hormone-disrupting ingredients
When your detox organs (colon, liver, lymph, kidneys) are completely overwhelmed, these toxins don’t just disappear into thin air.
They circulate, and eventually, they surface.
Often through your skin.
This is why so many people experience:
Persistent inflammatory acne
Eczema
Rashes
Dermatitis
Psoriasis
Redness, inflammation, or itching
Chronic irritation
Dull skin
Poor healing
Skin that never seems to “fully clear”, no matter how hard they try
Your skin is doing its best to protect you.
But, it’s most definitely not meant to be your primary detox organ.
A Quick Note on Skincare
Even though skin issues are internal first, what you put on your skin still matters.
Many “clean” or medical-grade skincare products contain pore-clogging, acne-triggering, and hormone-disrupting ingredients that can keep skin stuck in a cycle of inflammation, especially if your detox pathways are already burdened.
If you’re actively working on healing your skin, I strongly recommend being very intentional with your topical products
I personally only use CLEARSTEM because:
Every product is non-pore-clogging
They are free of endocrine disruptors
They’re designed to support acne-prone, inflamed, and hormonally sensitive skin
They don’t interfere with detox or healing protocols
If you’re rebuilding your skin from the inside out, the last thing you want is a product quietly working against you.
You can use my CLEARSTEM discount code (MEGHAN at checkout for 15% off) to support your skin while you also actively address the internal root causes internally.
Clear skin requires:
Proper elimination
Open, supported detox pathways
A balanced internal terrain
When the body can actually clear waste efficiently, the skin no longer needs to act as a backup detox organ. It then begins to normalize naturally, often without aggressive or invasive external interventions.
Your skin is communicating with you right now.
And once you listen and respond correctly, it will heal.
Clear skin is really just a byproduct of your internal health.
Yes, good skin truly comes from within.
