We spend a lottttt of time talking about what to eat.
Far less time asking whether we can actually digest it.
Low stomach acid is one of the most overlooked drivers of chronic digestive and metabolic issues…hands down.
And, most people assume the exact opposite is happening.
They feel bloated, reflux-y, or uncomfortable after meals and are told they have “too much acid”.
In many cases, they actually don’t have enough.
Stomach acid isn’t just there to break down food.
It’s a critical upstream signal that sets the entire digestive process in motion.
Adequate stomach acid helps:
Break down protein into absorbable amino acids
Trigger pancreatic enzymes and bile release
Liberate key nutrients like iron, B12, zinc, and magnesium
Act as a major barrier against unwanted microbes and pathogens we encounter through food and the environment
Signal satiety and regulate gastric emptying
When acid levels are low, food isn’t fully digested.
It lingers longer in the stomach and small intestine, begins to ferment, and symptoms like gas, bloating, or reflux can follow.
Not because there’s excess acid.
But because digestion never fully completed.
Common Signs of Low Stomach Acid
Low stomach acid can show up in ways many people wouldn’t immediately connect to digestion.
Some of the most common signs include:
Bloating or heaviness after meals
Feeling overly full after eating small amounts
Reflux or heartburn
Burping shortly after eating
Gas or fermentation after protein-heavy meals
Undigested food in stool
Chronic fatigue despite eating well
Nutrient deficiencies (iron, B12, and zinc)
Hair thinning, brittle nails, or dull skin
Increased susceptibility to gut infections or imbalances
Craving salty foods
Over time, inadequate stomach acid can contribute to larger downstream issues, including gut dysbiosis, poor nutrient status, hormone imbalances, and metabolic dysfunction.
Why Stomach Acid Becomes Low
Low stomach acid rarely exists in isolation.
It’s usually a reflection of broader physiology and lifestyle patterns.
Some of the most common contributors include:
Chronic stress
Digestion requires a parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) state. When the nervous system is chronically activated, stomach acid production often declines.
Mineral depletion
Hydrochloric acid requires minerals, particularly zinc, sodium, and chloride.
Long-term poor dietary patterns
Highly processed foods and inconsistent meal timing can disrupt digestive signaling.
Overuse of antacids or acid-suppressing medications
Age-related changes in digestive signaling
Chronic gut imbalances
Microbial overgrowths can alter stomach acid production and feedback loops.
Ways To Naturally Support Stomach Acid
The goal isn’t to force acid production.
Rather, it’s to restore the conditions that allow the body to produce it properly.
Here are several foundational strategies to support you.
1. Slow Down Before Eating
Digestion starts before food even enters the stomach.
When we eat while stressed, rushed, or distracted, the body stays in sympathetic mode.
Take 30–60 seconds before eating to:
Take a few slow breaths
Step away from screens
Let your body shift into “rest and digest”
This alone can improve digestive signaling dramatically.
2. Chew Your Food Thoroughly
Mechanical digestion is the first step of chemical digestion.
Chewing stimulates:
stomach acid production
enzyme release
digestive signaling throughout the GI tract
A good rule of thumb:
Chew until food is nearly liquid before swallowing.
3. Use Bitter Foods
Bitters naturally stimulate digestive secretions, including stomach acid.
Some simple options include:
Arugula
Radicchio
Dandelion greens
Lemon water before meals
Digestive bitters
Bitter compounds send signals to the stomach, pancreas, and liver to prepare for digestion.
4. Avoid Excessive Liquid With Meals
Large amounts of fluid during meals can dilute digestive enzymes and stomach acid.
Instead:
hydrate between meals
sip minimally while eating
5. Support Mineral Intake
Stomach acid production depends on adequate minerals. Focus on foods rich in:
Zinc: pumpkin seeds, oysters, legumes
Sodium + chloride: mineral-rich sea salt
Magnesium: leafy greens, cacao, nuts
Potassium: fruits and vegetables
Many people eating whole foods still fall short on mineral intake, particularly if soil quality is poor.
6. Manage Chronic Stress
Stress is one of the biggest suppressors of digestion by far.
If the nervous system is constantly in “fight or flight”, the body deprioritizes digestion entirely.
Support practices that regulate the nervous system:
breathwork
walking after meals
sunlight exposure
meditation
slowing down your eating environment
7. Support The Larger Detox Pathways
Digestion doesn’t exist in isolation.
The stomach, liver, pancreas, microbiome, and lymphatic system are deeply interconnected.
When detox pathways are congested, digestive signaling can suffer as well.
This is why, in my work, I don’t only look at what someone eats.
I look at whether they can:
break food down
absorb nutrients
eliminate waste effectively
and actually use what they consume
Because nourishment isn’t just about intake.
It’s about assimilation.
And, if digestion is compromised at the very first step…
absolutely everything downstream will be deeply affected.
If you’re struggling with bloating, fatigue, gut issues, or feeling like your body simply isn’t responding to a healthy diet the way it should…
it may be time to look deeper at how your body is digesting and detoxifying.
Often, the symptoms people attribute to “too much acid” are actually signs that digestion isn’t functioning optimally at the very first step.
