Before we dive in, if you want to understand where your menstrual cycle health stands right now, take my free Cycle Audit before reading. It takes 2 minutes and will make everything below much more personal.

Every woman in wellness is “cycle syncing” right now.

Seed cycling in the follicular phase, strength training in the ovulatory phase, eating warm foods in the luteal phase, resting during menstruation, scheduling difficult conversations around ovulation…

Tracking apps, basal thermometers, Mira monitors, Oura tags….

None of it is wrong.

But, it’s exhausting.

And, almost none of it works if the terrain underneath is wrecked.

I want to be precise about what I mean by that, because “cycle health” has become one of the most over-spiritualized, under-investigated topics in women’s wellness.

There is an enormous gap between honoring your cycle and actually having one that’s biologically functional.

Cycle syncing is a maintenance protocol.

It assumes you already have a regular, ovulatory, low-pain, well-metabolized cycle to sync with.

If you don’t, no amount of seed rotation is going to manufacture one.

What An Actually Functional Cycle Looks Like

26–32 days, consistently
A 4–5 day bleed that’s red, not brown, not clotted, not flooding
Confirmed ovulation around day 14, not “I think I ovulate”
Mild PMS at most (not bedridden cramps, breast tenderness so severe you can’t sleep on your stomach, or three days of rage before your period)
Clear skin, not cyclical jawline acne
A cycle that exists without hormonal birth control sustaining it

If any of those are off, you don’t have a cycle problem.

You have a terrain problem that’s showing up as a cycle problem.

Where The Real Work Actually Is

Here’s where the real work actually is, in this order:

Drainage. Your liver is responsible for metabolizing estrogen and clearing it through bile, into the colon, out of the body. If your colon isn’t moving daily (and most women’s aren’t) that estrogen gets reabsorbed in something called enterohepatic recirculation. You make new estrogen, the old estrogen comes back, the receptors get overloaded, and the cycle gets heavier, more painful, more PMS-laden every month. None of this shows up on a standard hormone panel. You will not seed-cycle your way out of it.
The estrobolome. This is the specific population of gut bacteria that regulates how your body metabolizes and excretes estrogen. When gut diversity is low, usually from antibiotics, the pill, stress, processed food, or glyphosate exposure, the estrobolome shifts in ways that recirculate active estrogen back into circulation. The pill, ironically, is one of the things that disrupts the gut population responsible for clearing the pill’s own hormones years later. This is one of the reasons post-pill recovery takes 18–36 months instead of the “three months” you were told.
The liver. Phase I and Phase II detoxification pathways are how your body converts estrogen into safer metabolites. If you’re under-methylated (common with MTHFR variants), low on glutathione, deficient in B vitamins, or carrying significant toxic load, your liver pushes estrogen through Phase I and stalls in Phase II, leaving you sitting in 4-hydroxyestrone, the most inflammatory estrogen metabolite. This is what fibroids, endometriosis, severe PMS, and estrogen-dominant breast tissue all share underneath: a liver that can’t finish the job.

This is the terrain.

This is what cycle syncing assumes is already working.

Why This Matters Now

The wellness industry has a vested interest in keeping cycle health surface-level.

Seed cycling sells seeds.

Cycle-tracking apps sell subscriptions.

“Eating for your phase” sells cookbooks.

None of it confronts the woman who is doing all of it perfectly and still bedridden three days a month, still breaking out, still bleeding for nine days, still not ovulating, still wondering why her body won’t behave.

The answer is almost never more “cycle syncing”.

The answer is almost always to stop trying to optimize a broken signal and start fixing what’s broken underneath.

Where To Start

I built a Cycle Audit to give women a real read on where they actually are.

It’s ten questions and takes 2-3 minutes to complete. It scores cycle length, bleed quality, pain severity, PMS, skin patterns, ovulation, birth control history, and any diagnosed conditions, and tells you whether your cycle is genuinely solid, under stress, or in crisis.

Most women find out their cycle is more compromised than they thought. The point isn’t to scare anyone. The point is to stop wasting time on protocols that assume a foundation that isn’t there.

→ Take the Cycle Audit Quiz

If your cycle is solid, protect it. If it’s under stress, address the terrain. If it’s in crisis, the work is deeper than any app or supplement protocol, and I can show you what that actually looks like.

The cycle isn’t the problem.

What’s underneath the cycle is.

If this resonated, I’d love to know: drainage, the estrobolome, or the liver — which one do you suspect is the limiting factor for you right now? Let me know in the comments. I read and reply to every response.

And, if you’re ready to address the actual terrain rather than layer more inputs onto a system that hasn’t been cleared, I’m currently taking a very limited number of new 1:1 coaching clients. Book a consultation here.
