I’m hosting a free 60-minute live (and recorded) Detox Masterclass tomorrow, Tuesday, September 8 on how to actually address your underlying terrain. If this essay resonates, that’s the deeper version live. Save your spot here.
Hope you’re having a great Labor Day weekend.
If your body feels a little more sluggish, puffier, foggier, or heavier than it did before this past Thursday, you are not alone.
And, you’re not doing anything wrong. Long weekends of eating, drinking, staying up later, and moving less put more on the terrain than a normal week does.
The body notices.
Which brings me to a diagnostic I want to walk you through today.
Quiet Signs Your Toxic Load Is Too High
Most people don’t realize their toxic load is too high until it has been running the show for years.
The body is patient.
It compensates, reroutes, and absorbs the burden silently until the burden crosses a threshold, and then the symptoms start showing up in places that seem unrelated.
Some of them look like aging.
Some of them look like bad genes.
Some of them look like “just how I am now”.
But, trust me…almost none of them are what they look like.
Here is what I see most often:
You wake up tired no matter how long you slept
You wake up at 2 or 3am and can’t fall back asleep
You feel wired but tired, exhausted but can’t actually sleep
You have joint pain that moves around, never quite the same place twice
You’re constipated more often than not
You feel bloated by 4pm no matter what you ate
Your brain feels foggy by 2pm
Your skin breaks out along your jawline
You have eczema, psoriasis, hives, rashes, or dermatitis that won’t resolve
Your tongue has a white or yellow coating
You smell stronger than you used to
You can’t sweat, or you sweat at the slightest thing
You have dark circles that nothing fixes
Your hair is thinning, breaking, or falling out
You react to foods that never used to bother you
You can’t tolerate caffeine or alcohol the way you used to
You react badly to supplements that used to work
You can’t handle perfume, cleaning products, or strong smells
Your cycle is shorter, longer, or more unpredictable than it used to be
Your PMS or periods are heavier, longer, or more painful than they used to be
Your libido has quietly disappeared
You feel puffy in the morning
You’re cold all the time
You can’t lose weight, no matter what you do
You’ve been told everything looks “normal” on your labs but you know something isn’t right
If you recognized yourself in more than a few of these, you are not broken.
Your body is not malfunctioning.
It’s overburdened.
A Quick Reframe
Almost every item on that list is a downstream signal of the same upstream failure: the body’s ability to clear what it has been taking on has been outpaced by what it has been asked to process.
Not 25 separate problems.
One problem, showing up in 25 places.
This is why layering more supplements, peptides, or protocols onto a system that isn’t clearing doesn’t work.
You are adding inputs to a system that cannot process what it already has. The body has been asking for something else the whole time.
It has been asking for less. And, it has been asking for it in a specific order.
The Five Phases
The path back to a clear terrain is a sequence, not a single intervention.
Every phase depends on the phase before it being in place first. Skip the order, and the body cannot hold the work.
Phase 1: Foundational drainage + colon.
Drainage is the physical infrastructure of elimination. The colon, the liver, the lymph, the kidneys, the skin, and the lungs. Before anything else can be cleared, these pathways have to be open and moving.
When drainage is closed and someone begins any deeper detox work, whatever the body mobilizes has nowhere to go. It recirculates and redeposits. The symptoms get worse, not better.
This is why so many people start a cleanse and feel terrible for weeks, then quit.
This phase is unglamorous. It is not a supplement; it is the foundation.
Phase 2: Gut + terrain rebuild.
Roughly 80% of the immune system lives in and around the gut. The microbiome regulates hormone metabolism, neurotransmitter production, nutrient absorption, and inflammation.
When the gut is dysbiotic, everything downstream is dysbiotic.
This phase rebuilds the gut lining, restores stomach acid and enzymes, rebalances the microbiome, and restores bile flow so the terrain can actually receive what comes next.
Everything downstream reorganizes when the foundation stabilizes.
Phase 3: Liver + kidney + gallbladder.
The liver, kidneys, and gallbladder together do the heavy processing. The liver metabolizes toxins, hormones, and pharmaceutical compounds. The kidneys filter blood and excrete water-soluble waste. The gallbladder stores and releases the bile that carries fat-soluble toxins out.
When any one of these is under-supported, the entire processing chain slows down. Sluggish bile flow is one of the most under-recognized drivers of skin issues, hormone imbalances, dark circles, low libido, difficulty tolerating fats, and weight that will not shift.
Only after drainage is open and the gut is holding does this work become viable. The liver will mobilize compounds the colon cannot clear if you go here first.
Phase 4: Parasites + pathogens.
Now, and only now, can we begin addressing the deeper terrain layers.
Parasites are more common than most people realize. They live in the gut, in tissue, and in organs, disrupting nutrient absorption, driving inflammation, and depleting the body of minerals. Most conventional stool tests miss them entirely.
Going after parasites before drainage, gut, and liver work is why so many people crash on parasite protocols. The die-off has nowhere to go, and the body cannot process what is being mobilized.
Do this phase in sequence, and it works.
Phase 5: Mold + heavy metals.
The deepest layer. Mold and mycotoxins live in fat tissue and neural tissue and are extraordinarily difficult to clear without specific binders and support protocols. Heavy metals like mercury, aluminum, and lead accumulate over decades and require careful chelation only after every earlier phase is functioning.
This is where most detox marketing starts, but it is where terrain-based work ends. Attempting this phase without the drainage system, gut, liver, and parasites already addressed will make you sicker than when you started.
Integration.
This is not a phase. It is the ongoing work of holding what you have built. Remineralizing, maintaining bile flow, keeping the drainage system open, and continuing to support the terrain long after the deeper phases are complete.
The body is always trying to heal. Integration is what keeps it able to do so.
The Order Matters
This is what I teach my clients: drainage first, gut and terrain second, liver and kidney and gallbladder third, parasites and pathogens fourth, mold and heavy metals fifth.
The order is not arbitrary.
The order is the difference between actually feeling better and feeling worse for six months before quitting.
Most detox marketing sells the opposite order.
It sells the parasite cleanse before the colon is moving.
It sells the heavy metal chelator before the drainage is open.
It sells the mold detox before the gut has been rebuilt.
And, it works for exactly the small percentage of people whose terrain happens to be resilient enough to tolerate the disruption.
For everyone else, the crash comes.
And, the person walks away believing they cannot do this work. What they cannot do is skip the sequence.
What Not To Do
So, please, before anything else, do not do the following:
Start with a parasite cleanse before the colon is moving daily
Take a heavy metal chelator before the drainage is open
Do a mold detox without gut and colon foundation in place
Layer three new supplements onto a system that cannot process the ones you’re already taking
Add a peptide protocol before addressing the terrain the peptides are being introduced into
Add a wearable to a body that has not yet been given permission to rest
Every one of these is a case of adding when the body is asking for subtraction.
The subtraction is what makes the addition possible.
Not the other way around.
The Throughline
Your body is not a series of unrelated systems.
It is one integrated terrain that has been carrying more than it was designed to carry, for longer than it was designed to carry it, in an environment more toxic than any generation in human history.
When you clear the terrain, the terrain clears the symptoms.
Not the other way around.
The quiet signs at the top of this post are not 25 different problems.
They are one problem, showing up in 25 places, because the drainage system that connects all of them has been overwhelmed.
Again, your body is not malfunctioning.
It’s overburdened.
And, once the burden comes off, the body knows exactly what to do.

Nice article! Great discussion. I’d add one important distinction: these symptoms can certainly be clues that something deeper deserves investigation, but they aren’t specific to toxicity. Fatigue, disrupted sleep, brain fog, bloating, constipation and migrating aches can have many potential contributors.
That’s why I like to look at three investigative buckets: sensitivities, deficiencies and toxicity—along with the person’s history and appropriate testing. Symptoms give us clues, but they don’t necessarily tell us the cause.
Test, Don’t Guess.™
