I didn’t sleep enough last night.
And, I felt like absolute garbage this morning.
One bad night, and I could literally feel my entire system struggling to compensate.
And, I honestly just can’t believe that millions of people feel this way every single morning — not because of one late night, but as their baseline.
Every day.
And, consider it normal.
So, let me say this clearly:
Sleep is definitely not a lifestyle preference.
It is by far the most powerful detox, repair, and regeneration process your body runs, and it only runs when you’re completely unconscious.
This is the piece of detox that almost nobody talks about.
We talk about drainage pathways, liver support, colon health, and lymphatic movement.
All of that matters enormously.
But, none of it works optimally in a sleep-deprived body, because sleep is when the body actually executes the clearing.
Here’s what’s actually happening while you sleep:
Your brain detoxes itself.
Your brain has its own lymphatic drainage network called the glymphatic system, and it runs primarily during deep sleep. During the day, your brain accumulates metabolic waste: inflammatory proteins, neurotoxic byproducts, amyloid, tau. The glymphatic system flushes all of this out of brain tissue at night.
This is the only time it runs at full capacity.
Skip sleep, or get fragmented shallow sleep, and that waste stays in your brain tissue. This isn’t a metaphor for feeling foggy. It’s the literal biological mechanism behind brain fog, cognitive decline, and the emerging research linking poor sleep to neuro-degeneration.
Your liver does its deepest detox work between 1AM and 3AM.
In traditional Chinese medicine, the liver is associated with the 1–3AM window. Modern research backs this up: hepatic detoxification follows circadian rhythms, and liver enzyme activity and bile production peak overnight.
If you’re not in deep sleep during this window, the process is interrupted. Your liver is trying to do its most important work of the day while you’re watching Netflix or doom-scrolling.
Your hormones reset.
Cortisol, insulin, leptin, ghrelin, growth hormone, melatonin — all of them follow sleep-dependent rhythms. One night of poor sleep measurably disrupts every single one.
Cortisol rises, insulin sensitivity drops, leptin (the hormone that signals fullness) decreases, ghrelin (the hunger hormone) increases, and growth hormone, which governs tissue repair and cellular regeneration, is primarily secreted during deep sleep.
This is why one bad night affects your appetite, your mood, your metabolism, and your cognitive function all at once.
Add to this the gut lining that repairs overnight, the cytokines your immune system produces during sleep, and the cellular DNA repair that runs while you’re unconscious, and the picture is hard to argue with.
The most expensive supplement (or peptide) stack in the world will not compensate for chronic sleep deprivation.
In 1942, Americans averaged 7.9 hours of sleep per night.
By 2013, that had dropped to 6.8 hours.
The chronic disease rates tracked alongside it, not coincidentally.
No protocol, no peptide, no optimization hack, no biohack exists that overrides what happens (or doesn’t happen) when you don’t sleep.
It is the foundation.
Everything else is built on top of it.
So, here are my sleep non-negotiables, meaning what I actually do every night:
In bed and asleep by 9–9:30 PM — non-negotiable except for genuine exceptions (like an occasional late night with friends).
Room at 68°F or colder — core body temperature needs to drop to initiate deep sleep.
No food 2-3 hours before bed — digestion competes with the repair processes sleep is trying to run.
No liquids 2 hours before bed — to avoid middle-of-the-night waking.
No screens 1 hour before bed — I use Opal (30 days free) to block apps at 8 PM. Blue light suppresses melatonin production for up to 3 hours after exposure.
Blue light blocking glasses if I need a device after 8 PM (I have these ones from Ra Optics, plus a shortcut to turn my iPhone screen red).
Red light only in the evening — red wavelengths do not suppress melatonin the way blue and white light do (try The Healthy Home or Yuji Intl. bulbs).
Blackout curtains or a sleep mask (I have this one) — any light exposure during sleep suppresses melatonin and fragments sleep architecture.
Magnesium glycinate before bed — magnesium supports GABA activity, which promotes relaxation and deep sleep onset without the grogginess of pharmaceutical sleep aids or melatonin.
Binaural beats sleep frequency playlist as I fall asleep — delta wave frequencies (0.5-4 Hz) have been shown to support deep sleep onset. I use one like this every night.
Wake naturally before sunrise without an alarm — when sleep is adequate and consistent, the body wakes naturally. I hate to break it to you, but your alarm is a symptom of either insufficient sleep duration or inconsistent sleep timing.
(And, since I know you’ll ask, I don’t use an Oura ring or any sleep wearable. In fact, I actually threw mine out last June. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is listen to the innate wisdom and intelligence of your own body.)
The best morning routine starts the night before.
And, the best detox protocol you can do tonight costs absolutely nothing.
So, go to sleep early tonight.
You will thank me tomorrow!
Again, sleep is the foundation. Drainage and gut work are what you build on top of it. If you’re curious where your body actually is in the order of operations, you can take my detox phase quiz here, as it’ll tell you what your body needs next.
