Did you know that indoor air is typically two to five times more polluted than outdoor air (EPA, 2024)?
And since we spend approximately 90% of our lives indoors (National Human Activity Pattern Survey), this matters more than most people realize.
As our homes have become more energy-efficient and tightly sealed, they reduce ventilation and trap pollutants inside—turning our safe spaces into invisible toxin traps.
Common indoor pollutants include:
Nitrogen oxides
Particulate matter (PM2.5)
Carbon monoxide
Combustion gases
Ozone
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
Mold spores and fungal fragments
Flame retardants
Outdoor pollutants that sneak inside
These toxins often come from everyday sources, like cleaning products, building materials, furniture, personal care items, pest control chemicals, paint, unfiltered gas stoves, and more.
Without proper ventilation and filtration, these pollutants accumulate—and begin to impact the air you breathe, and ultimately, your health.
The Impact of Poor Air Quality
So, what’s actually happening to your body when the air in your home is compromised?
PM2.5 (fine particulate matter) — Penetrates deep into your lungs, causing inflammation, respiratory issues, and cardiovascular problems over time.
Carbon dioxide buildup — Leads to fatigue, brain fog, poor focus, and headaches.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) — Can irritate eyes and airways, disrupt hormones, damage organs, and are even linked to cancer.
Carbon monoxide — Can cause confusion, dizziness, nausea, and in extreme cases, be fatal.
Many of these pollutants are odorless, colorless, and invisible, which is the scary part. You won’t notice them until your health starts to suffer.
How To Improve Indoor Air Quality (Quickly & Effectively)
Unlike other wellness shifts that take time, improving your indoor air can deliver almost instant benefits—better sleep, improved focus, and easier breathing.
Here’s how to get started:
Ditch The VOCs
VOCs are some of the worst offenders and also the most common. They’re released by paints, furniture, cleaning products, candles, and even your laundry detergent.
Switch to non-toxic, low-VOC products like:
Branch Basics (code MEGHAN15 for 15% off)
Blueland (5-10% off applied at checkout)
Bonus: Get rid of synthetic air fresheners or candles, and swap in essential oil diffusers or beeswax candles.
Ventilate Often
Open your windows daily, even for 10–15 minutes. Create cross-ventilation by opening windows on opposite sides of your home. Run exhaust fans when cooking or showering, and leave them running for 10–15 minutes afterward to flush out lingering toxins and moisture.
Use HEPA Air Purifiers
High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters capture 99.97% of airborne particles, including dust, pollen, mold spores, and more.
Here are some brands I love and trust:
AirDoctor (huge sale-on-sale discount applied at checkout through April 9) — I have one in my bedroom and in my living room.
Windmill — I have one in my office that was gifted to me.
Coway AP-1512HH (amazing cost-friendly option)
If you can’t get one in every room, prioritize your bedroom and/or your main living space. You need one for approximately every 300 square feet for full coverage.
Control Humidity Levels
Keep indoor humidity between 30-50%. If humidity is too high, this will encourage mold growth; if it’s too low, this will irritate your airways. Use a hygrometer to measure and either a dehumidifier or a steam or evaporative humidifier (not ultrasonic!) depending on your climate.
Clean Regularly
Vacuum your home 2–3X a week using a HEPA-filtered vacuum to trap particles instead of recirculating them. I have this Dyson cordless vacuum, but you can also check out this one or this one. Use damp microfiber cloths when dusting to trap particles instead of kicking them into the air.
Improving your air doesn’t require a total home overhaul. Just one shift—a HEPA filter, opening windows, or ditching your scented products—can make a real difference.
Don’t forget that AirDoctor is having a huge sale through April 9th. If you’ve been thinking about getting HEPA air filters for your home, use this link (discount applied at checkout) to get major savings for the next few days.
