Somewhere between the mountains of Colorado and the red rocks of Moab, Utah over the past several weeks, I’ve realized how much noise I’d previously been carrying while living in Los Angeles.
This past Sunday evening, I watched the full moon rise over the desert — its light stretching across the sandstone like liquid silver. The La Sal Mountains glowed in shades of pink and purple in the distance.
Later that evening, I hiked to Delicate Arch in Arches National Park under that same moonlight, long after the crowds had gone home.
I was in the desert in complete stillness.
No phone.
No notifications.
No soundtrack other than my own breath and the wind.
And, in that deep silence, something inside me exhaled.
It’s easy to think of detox as something only physical — clearing a congested colon, cleansing an overburdened liver, opening up detox pathways, and flushing toxins from the body.
But, there’s another kind of toxicity that most of us never even come close to properly addressing: distraction.
The tabs open in our minds.
The dopamine loops.
The constant stimulation that keeps us just slightly disconnected from ourselves without us even realizing it.
Just like your liver filters what you consume, your mind filters every bit of information you let in.
And, just like the colon can get congested, so can your attention.
When that happens, energy absolutely can’t flow.
You start to feel foggy, reactive, ungrounded, and disconnected — even if you’re eating whole foods, staying hydrated, sleeping well, moving your body every day, and doing all the “right” things.
Here are a few simple ways to start your own distraction detox:
Reduce screen time after sunset. Let your mind dim with the sun. Blue light and overstimulation block your body’s natural repair signals. (I use an incredible app called Opal to block social media between 8PM and 8AM, and I highly recommend it. Here’s a code for 30 days free. I also put my phone on Airplane Mode before bed.)
Start your day in silence. Before checking messages or social media, connect inward — breathwork, journaling, or a short meditation. (I keep my phone on Airplane Mode until after my morning practice, and Opal helps block notifications so I’m not tempted to reach for my phone too soon.)
Turn off all phone notifications. You don’t need to be reachable at all times. Silence is a boundary — one that protects your nervous system and restores your focus.
Batch your communication. Check texts, emails, and DMs at set times instead of constantly grazing. Every interruption fragments your focus and energy.
Replace scrolling with stillness. Go for a walk. Sit in complete silence. Let your senses recalibrate.
Unsubscribe and unfollow. Every click is an energy exchange. Keep only what nourishes your growth and aligns with your peace.
Simplify your inputs. Choose one podcast, one newsletter, one book, or one teacher at a time. Depth is more detoxifying than volume.
Create tech-free zones. No screens in bed, during meals (whether you’re on your own or with others), or first thing in the morning. Let those spaces belong to presence.
Schedule intentional “no-input” time. A few hours each week without podcasts, calls, music, or conversation. Just silence and nature. That’s when clarity downloads.
Move your body to discharge digital tension. Short grounding walks or even a few deep breaths between calls help reset your dysregulated nervous system.
Reclaim transition moments. Don’t fill every pause with a scroll — let boredom or stillness exist. That’s where creativity lives.
Revisit your environment. Declutter your physical space. A clean visual field supports a calm mental one.
Create a “digital sunset”. Turn off blue lights, put your phone away (or at least turn it on Airplane Mode), and shift into analog mode — reading, journaling, tea, stretching, connection, intimacy — before bed.
Be intentional with stimulation. Music, movement, and conversation are incredibly powerful — but only when chosen consciously and intentionally, not by default when what you really need is a break to be with yourself in your own energy.
Protect your attention like energy. Because it is.
So, detox isn’t just about what leaves your body.
It’s about what you stop letting in.
Freedom starts with less — less noise, less input, less clutter.
And, when you clear the mental toxins, something beautiful happens:
Your intuition gets louder.
Your body starts to speak again.
And you remember what stillness and presence actually feel like.
So, tell me: What’s one area of mental clutter you can detox right now? A thought pattern? A digital habit? A relationship that drains instead of expands? Audit it, and release it. Then, reply below and share it with me, as I’d love to know what you’re letting go of this week.
