Most people think they’re doing the right thing by switching to LED bulbs.
They’re energy-efficient.
They last longer.
And, they even come in cozy “warm white” tones, so what’s the harm?
But, almost all LEDs—yes, even the warm, golden ones—emit blue light.
And, that seemingly minor detail could be disrupting your hormones, your sleep quality, your mood, and your overall health far more than you even realize right now.
Let’s break it down.
Why LED Light Is Actually Blue Light in Disguise
Nearly all modern LED bulbs are built on a blue LED base with a layer of phosphor that shifts the color toward white or warm tones.
But, the blue light doesn’t go away—it just gets filtered.
A large portion of it still seeps through, and as these bulbs age, they tend to emit even more blue.
Here’s why this matters for you:
Blue light is basically a daytime signal to your brain.
It suppresses melatonin, disrupts your circadian rhythm, and tells your hypothalamus and pituitary gland that it’s still time to be alert.
This is great in the morning, but it completely throws off your internal clock at night.
The Real Impact of Blue Light at Night
We’re not just talking about bad sleep.
Chronic exposure to artificial blue light at night has been linked to:
Hormonal imbalances
Poor REM sleep and next-day fatigue
Mood disturbances like anxiety and depression
Increased cancer risk in night shift workers due to suppressed melatonin (a powerful cancer-protective hormone)
And. it’s not just coming from your phone.
It’s in your lamps, your kitchen lighting, and your bedroom overhead lights—even when they look “warm”.
Flicker — The Invisible Stressor in LED Lights
Most LED lights also flicker.
They rapidly turn on and off (usually 120x per second) to save energy.
While this flicker is often invisible to the naked eye, your nervous system still very much perceives it.
To check if your lights flicker:
Open your phone camera in slow motion mode, point it at the bulb, and record. If you see pulsing bands across the screen—that’s flicker.
This LED light flicker can lead to:
Headaches
Eye strain
Dizziness
Fatigue
Difficulty concentrating
Even seizures in highly sensitive individuals
Flicker is particularly bad in cheaper LED bulbs, which often use low-quality electronics to convert AC to DC power.
How To Create A Healthier Evening Lighting Environment
Your evening lighting should support rest, not stimulate alertness.
Here’s how to optimize it:
Swap out your bulbs.
Use incandescent or halogen bulbs in the evening (like these). These mimic the warmth of firelight and don’t emit blue light or flicker.
Try amber-colored incandescents (like these) or even red bulbs for late-night use.
For multipurpose areas, use circadian-friendly LEDs that can toggle between day and night settings. (I like Healthy Home bulbs or Yuji Intl. bulbs.)
Avoid smart bulbs and Wi-Fi-controlled lighting. While they’re convenient, many smart bulbs constantly emit electromagnetic fields (EMFs), especially if they connect via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. If you're sensitive to EMFs or aiming to reduce your overall exposure, stick to wired or manual lighting solutions.
Change your lighting placement.
Use table or floor lamps instead of overhead lights at night. The human eye is especially sensitive to overhead light, which signals "daytime" to the brain.
Support your circadian rhythm.
Use apps like f.lux or Night Shift mode on your devices.
Color-shift your phone screen completely red if needed at night. (Ask ChatGPT for help!)
Invest in blue-light blocking glasses with orange or red lenses (from brands like Ra Optics, Bon Charge, or Felix Gray). These have been shown to support melatonin and improve sleep quality. (I’m eager to find a more stylish pair, so if you have any recommendations, send them my way or drop them in the comments.)
Keep your bedroom pitch black—cover indicator lights with tape, and use blackout curtains if needed.
If you’re traveling across timezones, download the Timeshifter app—it uses circadian science to help you adjust your light exposure, caffeine intake, and sleep timing for minimal jet lag.
Reduce flicker.
When buying LEDs, look for ones labeled “flicker-free” with:
Flicker percentage below 5%
Flicker index below 0.02
So, just remember that light is not neutral.
It’s actually one of the most powerful regulators of your hormones, brain, mood, metabolism, and immunity.
Your body really wants to wind down at night, but it needs the right environment to do so.
Swapping out your LED bulbs might seem small, but it can have a massive ripple effect on your sleep, energy, and long-term health.
Light like your ancestors did—sunshine in the morning, firelight at night.
Your nervous system—and your body—will thank you.
