Non-toxic clothing is about to blow up, and fast.
We’ve cleaned up our food.
We've cleaned up our water and air.
We’ve cleaned up our skincare and makeup.
We’ve cleaned up our cleaning products.
But, there’s one thing we’re still ignoring: our clothes.
Every day, we wrap ourselves in polyester, nylon, acrylic, and rayon—petroleum-based plastics laced with synthetic dyes, PFAS (“forever chemicals”), formaldehyde, and hormone-disrupting finishes.
Your skin is your largest organ.
It absorbs what you put on it.
So, why aren’t we questioning the fabrics we live in, sweat in, and sleep in?
How Toxic Fabrics Affect Your Health
Most people think of clothing as “external”, but it’s an extension of your environment.
When you wear synthetic, chemically-treated fabrics, you’re exposing your body to compounds that can:
Disrupt hormones – Chemicals like PFAS and phthalates can mimic or block estrogen, impacting fertility, thyroid function, and menstrual cycles.
Trigger skin irritation – Formaldehyde resins, azo dyes, and polyester blends are linked to eczema, rashes, and contact dermatitis.
Burden detox pathways – Many fabric finishes (wrinkle-free, stain-resistant, waterproof) contain endocrine disruptors and carcinogens, adding to your toxic load.
Contribute to microplastic pollution – Every wash sheds microscopic fibers into water systems, which can re-enter the food chain and our bodies.
This isn’t fear-mongering—it’s reality.
The same way we now read ingredient labels on food, we’ll soon be reading fiber labels on clothing.
The Clean Clothing Revolution
Just like organic food went from fringe to mainstream, I believe non-toxic clothing is about to blow up (and fast).
Brands like:
MATE the Label (organic fabrics, natural dyes, traceable supply chain)
Groceries Apparel (plant-based fabrics dyed with food waste)
Pact (GOTS-certified organic cotton basics)
Organic Basics (low-impact, timeless, ethical)
…are paving the way.
But, for now, they’re still quite niche.
This is the opportunity for the bigger players—Lululemon, Alo Yoga, Nike, Aritzia, UNIQLO, ZARA, H&M, SKIMS—to step up.
Consumers are waking up.
They want performance and purity.
Style and sustainability.
What To Wear Instead
If you’re ready to start detoxing your closet, here are the fabrics and materials to look for:
Organic Cotton – Free from pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, softer on the skin and planet.
Linen – Made from flax, naturally breathable, antibacterial, and long-lasting.
Hemp – One of the most sustainable fibers, requiring little water or chemicals.
Tencel™/Lyocell – Derived from sustainably sourced wood pulp, produced in a closed-loop system with non-toxic solvents.
Wool (organic or regenerative) – Naturally temperature regulating, moisture-wicking, and biodegradable.
Silk – A natural protein fiber that feels luxurious and allows skin to breathe (look for non-toxic dye certifications).
Plant-dyed fabrics – Avoiding azo dyes and opting for botanical colorants made from roots, leaves, or food waste.
And, always check for certifications like:
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (tested for harmful substances)
BLUESIGN® (sustainable chemistry & responsible production)
Why It Matters
Wellness isn’t just what you eat.
It’s what you breathe.
It’s what you put on your skin.
And, it’s what you wear—day in and day out.
The clean clothing revolution is coming.
The only question is: will you be ahead of it, or behind it?
I’d love to crowdsource this list. What other brands are leading the charge in non-toxic or regenerative clothing? Drop them in the comments—I want to highlight the ones doing it right.

This is awesome. Like you were reading my mind. I just referred to this as "the last frontier" to a girlfriend this weekend but didn't know where to start to make this change. I don't like the time, money and effort to find and evaluate new clothing brands. I tend to like the recommendations from people I trust, so this is a helpful starting point. Thanks Meghan!
Woohoo! I just got my second order from GROCERIES and I can't go back.
