Men’s testosterone has fallen 54% in the last 50 years.

Yes, you read that right!

A meta-analysis presented at the 2026 ESHRE Congress pooled 12 studies across 7 countries and 102,334 men, spanning 1972 to 2019. Total testosterone is declining roughly 1% per year, and the slope steepens after 2000.

Which means a 30-year-old man today is walking around with the testosterone level of a 50-year-old man in 1980.

One caveat worth naming: this was presented at a conference and hasn’t cleared peer review yet. But, it’s consistent with two decades of smaller studies pointing the same direction, and the direction is what matters here.

This is not “aging”.

Aging happens to individuals.

This is happening to a population, across seven countries, in a single generation. Genes don’t move that fast. Environments do.

Symptoms of Low Testosterone

Does this sound like you (or your partner, son, father, uncle, grandfather, male friend, or colleague if you’re a woman reading this)?

Fatigue that no amount of sleep resolves
Belly fat that won’t shift no matter how you train
Motivation that used to be automatic and now requires negotiation
Recovery that takes three days instead of one
Waking between 2 and 4 AM, wide awake, for no reason
Libido, mood, and mental clarity all quietly flatter than they were

Most men read that list and assume it’s stress, or age, or a phase. And, most men never test. 65% of men over 40 have never had testosterone measured. Around 55% can’t identify the symptoms of low testosterone in themselves.

So, the decline goes unnamed. And, unnamed problems get treated as personality.

What Is Actually Driving It

Here are five mechanisms, and none of them are a supplement deficiency.

1. Endocrine disruptors. Phthalates in plastics, food packaging, fragrance, cleaning products, and personal care. NHANES data found boys aged 6 to 12 with higher phthalate exposure had testosterone levels 24 to 34% lower than their peers, before puberty and before lifestyle is even a variable.

2. Fat tissue converting testosterone into estrogen. Roughly 80% of a man’s estrogen comes from aromatase activity in adipose tissue. More fat means more aromatase, which means more testosterone converted away. And, lower testosterone makes fat easier to store. The loop feeds itself, and it does not care how hard you train.

3. A leaking gut. This is the one I see most in practice even though it’s rarely discussed. The GELDING theory proposes that intestinal permeability lets bacterial endotoxin into circulation, where it drives systemic inflammation and directly suppresses testicular function. Gut integrity is upstream of hormone production. Not adjacent to it. Upstream.

4. Metabolic dysfunction. Insulin resistance suppresses testosterone. Suppressed testosterone worsens insulin resistance. This is the same self-reinforcing loop as the fat tissue, running in parallel.

5. Nanoplastics. A February 2026 study in Food and Chemical Toxicology found nanoplastics disrupting cholesterol metabolism in the testes. Cholesterol is the raw material testosterone is built from. Interfere with the supply chain, and the output drops. There’s no hormonal signaling problem required.

And, running underneath all five, chronic stress and HPA axis dysregulation pull resources away from reproduction because the body has decided this is not a safe decade to build in.

Why The Industry Response Is Completely Backwards

TRT prescriptions grew 1,100% between 2000 and 2025 (!!!).

So, we have a category that’s simultaneously underprescribed for the men who genuinely need it, AND overprescribed for the men chasing a performance number.

Both of those things are downstream of the same failure, which is that nobody is naming what caused the decline in the first place.

When you replace a hormone without touching the terrain that lowered it, you get a number that looks better on a panel.

But, the phthalate load is still there, the gut is still permeable, the adipose tissue is still aromatizing, and the metabolism is still dysregulated.

You’ve moved the readout without moving the reality, and you’ve now added exogenous hormones to a body that couldn’t clear its own.

There are men for whom TRT is genuinely appropriate. I’m not arguing against it.

I’m just arguing about the order.

The Order

Low testosterone is not a supplement problem; it’s a terrain problem.

Which means the sequence looks like this, shaped:

Open the exits first — colon, liver, lymph, kidneys, lungs, and skin. Hormones are cleared through the same pathways everything else is cleared through, and a congested exit means recirculation, which we don’t want.
Then, rebuild the gut, because a permeable barrier is a continuous source of the inflammation suppressing production.
Then, reduce the input load — plastics, fragrance, packaging, water, and personal care substantially.
Then, address metabolic function, because insulin resistance and aromatase are doing more damage than most men’s training volume can outrun.
Then, test.
Then, ONLY THEN, decide about TRT, if there’s still a decision to make.

Most men are trying to add testosterone to a body that is actively working to get rid of it. That is a losing arithmetic no matter what the dose is.

Fix the terrain, and the hormones tend to follow.

Send this to your father, son, partner, uncle, grandfather, male friend, or colleague who needs to see this. He deserves to know.

If this hit, I would love to know: have you or someone in your life had these symptoms written off as stress, age, or a phase? Let me know in the comments. I read and reply to every response.

If you’re ready to address the actual terrain rather than layer more interventions onto a system that hasn’t been cleared, I’m currently taking a very limited number of new 1:1 coaching clients heading into August and September. The first step is a 45-minute Client Intake call where we map your full picture and figure out together whether the work is the right fit for where you are. Book your free Client Intake call.
