Before we dive in, if you want a real read on where your terrain is at right now, take my free Detox Phase Quiz before reading. It takes 2 minutes and will make everything below much more personal.
I blamed gluten.
Then dairy.
Then sugar.
Then alcohol.
Then coffee.
Then eggs.
Then nuts.
I eliminated every single one of these at some point over several years.
Food journaling, elimination diets, various protocols…all of it.
And, I still couldn’t figure out why my skin wouldn’t clear.
The deep cystic acne along my cheeks, my jawline, my back.
I tried different products, different diets, and different theories.
I had the exact same skin.
Because the problem was never the food.
The problem was what had been building in my body for years.
And, no elimination diet on earth was going to touch it.
I know this now because I’ve lived it, and because I see the same exact pattern in the intake forms I read every week. A constellation of symptoms that everyone has named individually and explained away, one at a time.
Almost no one walks in thinking they’re connected.
And, trust me…they almost always are.
So, here’s what’s actually happening.
When your primary elimination pathways are backed up, your skin becomes a compensatory backup exit.
The body recruits it to help move things out that the colon, liver, and lymphatic system can’t clear fast enough.
Acne, eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, cystic breakouts, chronic rashes, dermatitis — these are your primary exit routes waving a flag.
The flag says: something upstream is congested.
It does not say: try a new peptide-infused serum.
Here are the five root causes I see most consistently in clients who’ve tried everything and are still struggling.
1. The gut, and this is the big one.
Your gut and your skin are deeply, directly connected.
When digestion is impaired or the gut terrain is imbalanced, toxins and inflammatory byproducts can’t exit the body efficiently. The skin steps in as the compensatory backup exit.
This is why so many chronic skin issues don’t respond to topical treatments. The problem isn’t on the surface.
Common gut contributors I see:
Candida and yeast overgrowth
H. pylori and other bacterial infections
Parasites and pathogenic bacteria
Low stomach acid
Intestinal permeability (leaky gut)
Dysbiosis — an imbalanced gut microbiome
Poor bile flow and fat digestion
Slow gut motility, constipation, or sluggish elimination
That last one is probably the most important and the most overlooked.
Estrogen is eliminated through the bowel. If you’re not having 2-3 easy, complete bowel movements a day — yes, per day — estrogen gets reabsorbed into circulation before it can leave, hormone metabolites recirculate, toxins build up, and inflammation rises.
And, your skin compensates.
Clear skin starts with a clear gut.
2. Hormonal imbalances, but not for the reason you think.
Most skin issues get blamed on hormones. And, hormones are involved.
But, they don’t just malfunction randomly.
They become imbalanced when the colon and liver can’t clear them properly.
The patterns I see most consistently: estrogen dominance, excess androgens, poor estrogen clearance, hormone recirculation due to constipation, and birth control masking symptoms without ever resolving the underlying congestion.
Suppressing with hormonal contraception often “works”... until it doesn’t.
Because the root congestion still remains.
3. A stagnant lymphatic system.
This is the one most people have never considered.
Your lymphatic system is responsible for carrying inflammatory compounds, hormone metabolites, and cellular waste away from tissue and toward elimination.
When lymph is stagnant, which is common in bodies carrying chronic stress, sedentary patterns, and a heavy toxic load, those compounds accumulate in the dermal layers.
Chronic puffiness, dull skin that never quite glows, persistent redness, slow healing, skin that feels congested even when diet is clean — these are lymphatic signals.
Unlike the cardiovascular system, the lymph has no pump. It moves through muscle contraction, deep breathing, body movement, and hydration. A body that isn’t moving enough, breathing deeply enough, or drinking enough clean water has stagnant lymph.
And, stagnant lymph shows up on your face.
4. Nutrient deficiencies, even in people eating “clean”.
Your skin requires specific nutrients to regenerate, repair, and protect itself.
The most common deficiencies I see: zinc, vitamin A, B vitamins, iron, magnesium, and omega-3s.
You can eat clean and still be significantly deficient when your digestion is weak, your gut lining is compromised, or your liver is overburdened.
The food isn’t the issue. The absorption is.
Skin that won’t heal, scars slowly, stays inflamed, or breaks out cyclically is often undernourished at the cellular level.
More supplements won’t fix this if absorption is impaired. This is exactly why the drainage work comes before the supplementation.
5. Toxic burden, which is the piece almost no one has tested for.
We are exposed to more toxins today than at any point in human history.
Heavy metals, mold mycotoxins, pesticides, PFAS, plastics, endocrine disruptors in personal care products and cookware and water — a lifetime of accumulated exposure the body has been trying to process with drainage pathways that were never quite open enough.
When the colon, liver, and lymph are all working against a heavy toxic load, the skin becomes the overflow valve.
Persistent inflammatory acne, eczema that won’t resolve, rashes that come and go without clear triggers, and skin that never fully clears no matter what are all often linked to the toxic burden conversation that nobody is having.
A note on what you put on your skin.
Even though skin issues are internal first, what you put on your skin still matters. Many conventional and even “clean” skincare products contain pore-clogging, acne-triggering, and hormone-disrupting ingredients that can keep skin stuck in a cycle of inflammation, especially when detox pathways are already burdened.
If you’re actively working on healing your skin from the inside, I only use and recommend CLEARSTEM by The Beauty Founder, as every product is non-pore-clogging, free of endocrine disruptors, and designed specifically to support acne-prone, inflamed, and hormonally sensitive skin without interfering with detox or healing protocols.
What clear skin actually requires.
Proper elimination, open drainage pathways, a liver that can clear what it’s processing, a lymphatic system that’s moving, and a gut lining that can absorb what it needs.
When the body can actually clear waste efficiently, the skin stops needing to act as a compensatory backup exit. It normalizes, and very often without aggressive or invasive external interventions.
Your skin is communicating with you right now.
It’s been communicating for a while, probably.
Once you listen and respond correctly — upstream, in the right order — it heals.
If this resonated, I’d love to know: which of these five feels most relevant to your skin journey right now? Let me know in the comments. I read and reply to every single one.
And if you’re ready to actually address what’s upstream rather than just manage the surface, I have a few spots open for 1:1 work this fall. The first step is a free 45-minute call where we map your terrain together. and figure out what your body actually needs.

Thanks a lot for highlighting the relation between gut and skin! So many people aren't aware that they are directly connected and think that skin conditions are merely on the surface.
