Before we dive in, take my free Energy Audit to understand where your energy actually stands and the best next step for your situation. It takes two minutes.
The CDC just dropped new data on fatigue in America.
71.5% (yes, 71.5%) of US adults experienced fatigue on multiple days over the past three months.
1 in 6 experienced it most days or every day.
Women carry nearly double the burden of men — 20% of women report frequent fatigue compared to 13% of men.
The highest rates are in women ages 18 to 34. Right during the years most packed with career building, caregiving, and everything else.
Half of those with frequent fatigue reported difficulty in three or more areas of daily functioning. More than a third said it limited the kind or amount of work they can do.
The CDC report describes prevalence and patterns.
It doesn’t explain what causes it.
That’s the conversation I want to have with you today.
Because I see this constantly in intake calls.
The woman who sleeps 8 hours and wakes up more tired than when she went to bed.
The one doing everything right — eating clean, taking supplements, moving her body, — and still crashing by 2 PM every single day.
The one who has had every test run, been told her labs look fine, and genuinely can’t understand why she feels this way.
Fatigue that sleep doesn’t fix is not a sleep problem.
It’s a terrain problem.
Here are the reasons I see most consistently.
1. Your liver is working overtime at night, and not getting the right support.
The liver runs its deepest detox work between 1 and 3 AM. If you are waking up consistently in this window, or waking unrefreshed even after a full night, this is one of the most telling signs.
When the liver is overburdened — from accumulated toxic load, synthetic hormones, poor bile flow, or nutritional depletion — this overnight work becomes metabolic debt you carry into the next day. The result is fatigue that starts before you even get out of bed.
2. Your nervous system never exits fight-or-flight.
When the body is in chronic stress, the downstream effects are significant. Stomach acid drops, bile flow slows, blood moves away from digestive organs, and digestion essentially pauses.
The result: food doesn’t break down properly, nutrients don’t absorb, and the mitochondria don’t have the raw materials they need. And so the fatigue compounds, because the system that’s supposed to generate energy is running on depleted inputs in an environment that can’t process them efficiently.
A protocol running in a body that never leaves fight-or-flight will always be working against itself.
3. Your mitochondria are completely underwater.
The mitochondria are the energy-producing units of every cell. They require specific minerals like magnesium, B vitamins, CoQ10, and zinc as well as a cellular environment that is not inflamed, not toxic, and not flooded with the byproducts of poor drainage.
When the colon isn’t clearing, when the liver is backed up, when the lymphatic system is stagnant, metabolic waste accumulates at the cellular level. The mitochondria work harder to produce less. And the fatigue that results is not fixed by sleep, because sleep cannot replenish what toxic load keeps depleting.
4. Your thyroid is functioning, but your T4 isn’t converting.
Standard thyroid panels measure TSH and sometimes T4. They almost never measure free T3 — the active form, the one that actually does the work at the cellular level.
Approximately 20% of inactive T4 converts to active T3 in the gut. When gut integrity is compromised, this conversion is impaired. TSH looks normal, free T4 looks normal, but free T3 is low, and the fatigue, brain fog, hair loss, and cold intolerance that result are dismissed because the labs “look fine”.
5. You are absorbing almost nothing from what you’re eating.
You can eat an exceptionally clean diet and still be significantly depleted at the cellular level if your digestion is compromised.
Stomach acid is required to break down protein and release minerals. Bile is required to absorb fat-soluble vitamins — A, D, E, K. A compromised gut lining cannot absorb what has been digested.
If your system can’t absorb iron, you’re functionally iron-deficient regardless of what you eat. If you can’t absorb B12, your methylation cycle, which governs energy production, is impaired.
More supplements don’t solve a malabsorption problem. The terrain has to receive them first.
6. Your sleep is fragmented at a structural level.
Sometimes the issue isn’t sleep length; it’s quality. Airway resistance, upper airway obstruction, and subclinical sleep apnea are significantly underdiagnosed in women, especially in women who don’t fit the classic profile.
Waking consistently between 1 and 3 AM. Feeling more tired on days when you technically slept more. A practitioner noticing an unusual breathing pattern during rest. These are signals worth investigating with a sleep specialist in person, not just a home sleep test, which can miss the subtler patterns.
7. Your toxic burden is impairing cellular function.
Heavy metals accumulate in mitochondria and directly impair their energy-producing machinery. Mold mycotoxins are neurotoxic and immunosuppressive and directly suppress mitochondrial function. Environmental chemicals — PFAS, phthalates, pesticide residues — disrupt the hormonal and metabolic signaling that regulates energy.
Most people carrying significant toxic burden have absolutely no idea. Most standard labs don’t test for it. And, the fatigue it produces is identical in presentation to every other kind, which is exactly why it’s so consistently missed.
The pattern across all of these is very much the same.
The body is communicating clearly. It’s pointing upstream to the liver, the gut, the nervous system, the mitochondria, the drainage pathways and the conventional response is to address the symptom at the surface.
More coffee, a new peptide, more melatonin, a better supplement, or recommendation to “get more sleep” to someone who can’t figure out why sleep isn’t working.
71% of Americans are exhausted.
The CDC tells us how many.
No one is actually telling them why.
Fatigue that doesn’t resolve is almost always a terrain conversation.
And, the terrain responds when you address it in the right order.
