Let's face it—we’re all wildly addicted to our phones.
Our phones used to be an escape from reality, but now reality is becoming an escape from our phones.
Consider these eye-opening stats:
The average American spends almost 2 hours per day on social media—that’s about 30 full days each year.
In total, we spend nearly 12 hours per day across smartphones, tablets, and computers.
This staggering screen time contributes to feelings of loneliness, sadness, and even despair, while also exacerbating our sedentary lifestyles.
So, how do you set boundaries for yourself?
Here are a few simple strategies that have transformed my daily routine:
TURN OFF ALL PUSH NOTIFICATIONS. I’ve disabled them in Settings > Notifications—this simple change has changed my life.
KEEP BADGES ONLY FOR THE MOST IMPORTANT APPS. I only allow badges for Phone, Messages, Instagram, Gmail, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger.
SET UP DO NOT DISTURB MODE. I configure DND to only allow calls from my Favorites during the weekdays between 8AM-5PM, ensuring I’m not constantly interrupted while I am working.
ESTABLISH SLEEP MODE. I have a 60-minute wind-down starting at 8PM, a bedtime at 9PM, and a wake-up time at 5AM.
USE DOWNTIME SETTINGS. I’ve set Downtime from 8PM to 6AM on weekdays to make all apps inaccessible unless I choose otherwise.
MAKE APPS COMPLETELY INACCESSIBLE. I use an app called Opal to block social media between 8PM and 9AM. I highly recommend it. Here’s a code for 30 days free.
CHARGE YOUR PHONE IN ANOTHER ROOM AT NIGHT. I charge my phone in my office and spend 30-60 minutes reading in bed before sleeping.
Don’t let your phone control you—take control of your phone.
Even implementing one or two of these changes can drastically improve your everyday life.
