We reject artificial food dyes…yet some are swallowing a synthetic petroleum dye as a “nootropic”.

That’s the major paradox of methylene blue.

A coal-tar derived textile dye from the 19th century, now showing up in wellness and biohacking circles as “mitochondrial fuel”.

The major irony is that the same community that shuns Blue #1 in food and skincare is dropping brilliant-blue liquid into their mouths and calling it biohacking.

But, the science says otherwise:

It’s neurotoxic at low concentrations. Studies show neuronal damage and impaired signaling at levels not far from what supplements recommend.
It bioaccumulates in the brain and organs. Forensic autopsies reveal blue-green stained brain tissue.
It suppresses blood flow and oxygen metabolism in healthy brains. The opposite of the cognitive boost people are chasing.
It triggers serotonin syndrome if combined with SSRIs. With documented cases of hospitalization and even fatalities.

It’s not a gentle “natural” enhancer.

It’s a petrochemical dye with a very narrow therapeutic window.

So, what’s the smarter play?

Instead of reaching for synthetic dyes, leverage nature’s pigments that actually support mitochondrial function and interact safely with light:

Chlorophyll (greens, wheatgrass, chlorophyllin)
Phycocyanin (spirulina’s blue pigment)
Anthocyanins (blueberries, purple carrots, butterfly pea tea)
Melanin (endogenous, supported by foods like black sesame, cacao, mushrooms)

Pair pigment-rich foods with sunlight or red/near-infrared light exposure, and you get the benefits people are chasing...

without putting a coal-tar dye in your brain.

The real biohack is this.

Clean the terrain first.

Open your detox pathways.

Then, let nature do what it’s been doing for millions of years.

Because the body isn’t asking for hacks.

It’s asking for healing.
