For decades, we’ve been told to fear the sun.
Slather on SPF 50.
Avoid midday rays.
Hide like vampires.
Yet… melanoma rates have doubled in recent years.
Something doesn’t add up.
Let’s break it down:
Sunscreen doesn’t prevent melanoma.
Major studies (like the Nurses' Health Study II) show no clear link between sunscreen use and melanoma prevention. In fact, outdoor workers often have lower melanoma rates than indoor workers.
Most sunscreens disrupt your hormones.
Ingredients like oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, and homosalate are known endocrine disruptors. They’re banned or restricted in the EU, yet still widely used in U.S. products.
Some ingredients become even more toxic in the sun.
Compounds like octocrylene and avobenzone can break down under UV light into benzophenone—a potential carcinogen. Sunscreen becoming more dangerous in the sun? That feels quite ironic.
U.S. sunscreen regulation is wildly outdated.
The FDA hasn’t meaningfully updated its standards since 1978. Meanwhile, countries like France, Germany, and South Korea allow newer, safer, more effective filters that are banned or unavailable here.
Sun avoidance is driving a massive Vitamin D crisis.
Vitamin D is crucial for immune, hormone, bone, and mental health—yet over 40% of U.S. adults are deficient. Just 10–20 minutes of sun exposure can generate more Vitamin D than any supplement.
High SPF gives a false sense of security.
SPF only blocks UVB (burning), not UVA (aging and DNA damage). Higher SPF often leads people to stay out longer, reapply less, and burn worse.
A Smarter Way To Approach The Sun
Here’s a smarter sun strategy:
Build a gradual base tan. Start with short, intentional sun exposure—just 5 to 15 minutes a day—especially in the early morning or late afternoon. This helps your skin naturally adapt and produce melanin, your body’s built-in sun protectant, without burning.
Minimize exposure during peak UV hours (10am–4pm). This doesn’t mean hiding inside. But, if you’re going to be outdoors during these hours, take extra precautions—like shade breaks, covering up, and avoiding prolonged direct exposure when the UV index is highest.
Wear wide-brimmed hats and UPF clothing. Clothing can be your most consistent and effective sun protection. Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics with UPF ratings and protect your face, chest, shoulders, and neck with a broad-brim hat.
Use non-nano zinc oxide mineral sunscreen. Skip the chemical-laden sunscreens with oxybenzone, avobenzone, and octinoxate. These not only disrupt your hormones—they also contribute to coral reef destruction. Instead, choose non-nano zinc oxide, which creates a safe physical barrier without being absorbed into the bloodstream. Explore EWG Verified mineral sunscreens that are also fragrance-free, oxybenzone-free, and octinoxate-free. I personally love this one.
Eat antioxidant-rich, fiber-rich, alkaline whole foods to build your internal SPF. Foods like leafy greens, berries, turmeric, carrots, tomatoes, and chlorella are packed with antioxidants that help your cells fight UV damage from the inside out. Hydrating, alkaline foods also support liver detoxification—key for preventing sun sensitivity, acne, and inflammation.
Know your Fitzpatrick skin type and adjust accordingly. We all have different thresholds for sun exposure. Understanding your skin type (based on how easily you burn or tan) helps you create a customized sun strategy that supports vitamin D production without damage. Use the Dminder app, as it asks for your Fitzpatrick skin type and tracks UV index via your location—alerting you when you're nearing burn risk.
Sunlight isn’t the enemy.
Misinformation is.
The future of skin health isn’t chemical SPF 100 and avoiding the sun at all costs.
It’s a systems-based approach:
Internal antioxidant protection
Whole, alkaline foods that support your skin and liver
Safe, non-toxic topical protection
Conscious exposure to sunlight as a nutrient, not a threat
So, please don’t fear the sun.
Fear the system that profits when you do.
