The loneliest people in America aren’t the elderly.
They’re 18 to 25 year olds.
61% of young adults report feeling seriously lonely, more than any other age group, including the elderly.
15% of men now report having zero close friends.
50% of US adults experience loneliness regularly.
The average number of close friends has dropped from 3 to 2 over the past 30 years.
The US Surgeon General declared loneliness a public health epidemic in 2023.
Loneliness increases risk of early death by 26%.
Lonely people are 29% more likely to develop heart disease, 32% more likely to have a stroke, and 50% more likely to develop dementia.
Social isolation is as damaging to long-term health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
And, we spend an average of 7 hours a day on screens, but less than 30 minutes a day in meaningful face-to-face conversation.
This is being framed as a mental health crisis.
It is.
Definitely.
But it’s also a physical health crisis, and that part of the conversation is almost entirely missing.
Loneliness is not just an emotional experience.
It is a chronic biological stressor with measurable downstream effects on the body.
Chronic loneliness elevates cortisol continuously.
Not in spikes.
Chronically.
And, chronic cortisol elevation damages the gut lining, disrupts the microbiome, impairs immune function, dysregulates hormones, and accelerates cellular aging.
Loneliness suppresses immune function at the cellular level, specifically natural killer cell activity, which is one of the body’s primary defenses against infection and abnormal cell growth.
Loneliness disrupts sleep architecture. People who feel lonely spend more time in light, fragmented sleep and less time in the deep, restorative stages where the body repairs, detoxes, and regenerates.
Loneliness reduces gut microbiome diversity. Social contact, including physical touch, shared meals, and proximity, is one of the primary ways humans exchange beneficial microorganisms. Isolation literally depletes the terrain.
Loneliness accelerates biological aging. Studies measuring telomere length consistently show faster shortening in chronically lonely individuals.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.
I'm constantly at intimate dinners, birthday gatherings, group hikes, and intentional get-togethers in LA — small, curated moments where people actually talk, actually connect, and actually just sit with each other without an agenda or a screen between them.
I do it because I believe in it.
Not as a soft lifestyle choice. As biology.
Eventbrite reported thermal gathering attendance up 1,100%. Brands like Daybreaker and Othership are throwing sauna dance parties. Diplo runs a run club.
People are building wellness third spaces because they intuitively understand what the data is just now confirming — connection isn’t optional. It’s biology.
[I want to know more about the companies building the future of this movement. If you're a founder building in connection, community, or wellness third spaces — sauna culture, run clubs, sober social, third places, or anything adjacent — I'd love to hear from you. Share what you're building here.]
We have built a world that optimizes for productivity, convenience, and digital connection, while systematically removing the conditions under which human beings actually thrive.
And, we are seeing the consequences in the body, not just the mind.
Community, touch, eye contact, laughter, shared meals, real presence.
These aren’t soft lifestyle suggestions.
They are biological needs — as fundamental as sleep, food, air, and clean water.
And no supplement, protocol, or optimization hack exists that compensates for their absence.
The most powerful health intervention available to most people right now isn’t a new protocol.
It’s a dinner table.
If this lands, send it to the friend you've been meaning to call. That counts as the work.

I love your take on this. Loneliness is closely associated with connection, another biological driver that often gets put in the mental health bucket. Our biological drivers to connect are being inhibited by the ease and convenience of emotional numbing. We're not processing life in community. We're processing it alone and numbing when we feel overwhelmed. Numbing> Disconnection>Loneliness> Apathy.
loved this read and totally agree. when i was my loneliest i was also more commonly sick, tired and spent a lot more time in doctors and hospital appointments. that time has passed and feels like a different lifetime now that i have a better social life! and i love the idea of wellness third spaces. i had never thought to join any but now im so curious!
