If you’re scrolling on your phone right now while eating, you’ll probably want to read this.
If you’re stressed, rushed, distracted, multitasking, scrolling on your phone, or on a Zoom conference call while eating…
You’re not actually digesting—your body’s in fight-or-flight mode.
And, that leads to bloating, gas, sluggish digestion, and poor nutrient absorption.
Mindful Eating Tips
Here are some simple practices to help you slow down, reconnect with your body, and digest more effectively.
Mindful eating requires attention and effort—especially when you’re shifting away from more rigid, mindless, or rushed eating habits.
Be present while shopping for, preparing, serving, and eating your food.
Plate your food beautifully and eat in a calming environment (no clutter, soft music, natural light, pleasant company).
Take a few deep breaths before your meal.
Express gratitude for your food and anyone you're sharing it with.
Visualize the nourishment behind each ingredient.
Ask yourself: “How will eating this make me feel?”
Start with smaller portions. Eat until you're about 80% full—don’t aim to feel stuffed.
Eat slowly and savor every bite. Try to take 20–30 minutes for your meal.
Chew thoroughly—this alone can improve digestion dramatically.
Put your utensils down between bites.
Check in with your hunger levels as you eat.
Minimize distractions—turn off your TV, close your laptop, put down your phone.
Use all your senses—pay attention to textures, smells, colors, and taste.
Ask your loved ones to eat mindfully with you.
The Mindful Eating Framework
There’s no one right way to eat mindfully, but here’s a framework to guide you in the right direction.
1. Develop Awareness
Keep a food journal to uncover patterns in cravings, emotional/binge eating episodes, or restrictive thoughts.
Track your physical and emotional states before and after eating.
Identify possible triggers (stress, boredom, social pressure, alcohol, etc.) without judgment or guilt. Note which situations, places, or feelings make you reach for the comfort of food.
Note if you’re using food for comfort—and what that food represents emotionally.
Ask yourself: What needs am I not meeting right now—connection, closeness, self-care, quiet time, breaks, love, sleep, rest, joy, intimacy, space?
2. Pause and Check In
When you feel a strong craving, pause for just 1–2 minutes.
Ask yourself: Am I actually hungry? What am I feeling emotionally? What do I need right now? How will I fulfill that need? How will eating this make me feel—both my body and mind?
Even if you still eat the thing, you’ll understand why—and that’s progress.
3. Proceed from Empowerment
Choose what feels aligned in that given moment—based on your physical and emotional needs.
If you’re truly hungry, eat. If not, explore other ways to fulfill your needs.
You don’t have to suppress cravings—you just have to understand them.
Alternative Sources of Emotional Fulfillment
If you’re depressed or lonely, call a loved one, play with your dog or cat, or look at something that brings you joy.
If you’re anxious, dance to your favorite song, do a workout, do breathwork, or take a brisk walk outside.
If you’re tired, treat yourself with a hot cup of calming tea, take a warm epsom salt bath, light some scented candles, unplug, rest, or listen to soothing music.
If you’re bored, read a good book, watch a TV show or movie, move your body outdoors, create, or engage in a hobby that you really enjoy.
Mindful eating isn’t just a wellness buzzword—it’s biology.
Digestion starts in the nervous system.
When you eat in a state of stress or distraction, you disrupt digestion at every level.
One of the simplest ways to support your gut health is to eat your meals fully present.
Try one fully present meal today—no phone, no TV, no rush.
Just you and your food.
