One of the most addictive, dangerous substances in our food supply?
REFINED SUGAR.
The average American consumes 17 teaspoons (71.14 grams) of added sugar per day–far exceeding the American Heart Association’s recommendations of:
6 teaspoons (25g) for women
9 teaspoons (38g) for men
And, even those limits are still way too high.
Excess refined sugar is a major driver of chronic disease.
Obesity
Cancer
Type 2 diabetes
Heart disease & stroke
Alzheimer’s & cognitive decline
Hypertension & accelerated aging
Why Is Refined Sugar Highly Addictive?
Refined sugar is highly addictive—not just psychologically, but biochemically.
When you consume sugar, it causes a rapid spike in blood glucose levels, which triggers a surge in insulin to bring those levels back down.
This sudden rise and fall creates a rollercoaster effect, often leading to energy crashes, mood swings, and more cravings, especially for more sugar.
But, the deeper issue lies in the dopamine response.
Dopamine is the brain’s “reward” chemical. It’s released when we experience pleasure—and refined sugar causes a sharp, artificial surge in dopamine, similar to addictive drugs like cocaine or nicotine.
This repeated stimulation of the brain’s reward system can literally rewire neural pathways, increasing our desire for the same stimulus to feel that same hit of pleasure.
Over time, this:
Desensitizes dopamine receptors, making you crave even more sugar for the same effect
Creates a cycle of dependency, especially during emotional highs and lows
Contributes to addictive patterns of behavior—similar to substance abuse
This is why it’s not just about “willpower”.
Sugar literally hijacks your brain chemistry, making it incredibly hard to cut back once you're hooked.
And, unlike whole foods that contain natural sugars (which are bundled with fiber, vitamins, and minerals), refined sugar is stripped of nutrients, leaving you with empty calories and a spike–crash cycle that throws your metabolism, hormones, and mood completely out of balance.

Ethyl maltol
Yellow sugar
Confectioner’s sugar (powdered sugar)

Even “healthy” products like breakfast cereals, bars, yogurts, condiments, protein powders, and breads often contain alarming amounts of added sugars.
List of Unrefined Sugars
So, what’s a better approach?
Skip the refined, ultra-processed stuff—and opt for unrefined, natural sweeteners in moderation. Here are a few to consider:
Raw, Unpasteurized Honey
Naturally antimicrobial, rich in antioxidants and trace minerals (when raw and local).
Supports the immune system and can soothe digestion.
Tip: Choose raw and unfiltered honey from local sources for max benefits.
100% Pure Maple Syrup / Maple Sugar
Contains antioxidants and minerals like zinc and manganese.
Look for dark amber or grade B maple syrup for a richer mineral profile.
Tip: Avoid “pancake syrup” or anything with added corn syrup.
Coconut Palm Sugar
A low-glycemic sweetener with minerals like iron, zinc, calcium, and potassium.
Less processed than white sugar and contains a fiber called inulin that may help slow glucose absorption.
Pure Stevia Leaf Extract (not erythritol-blended or overly processed blends)
Comes from the stevia plant and is naturally sweet without impacting blood sugar.
Look for 100% pure stevia extract—many blends on the market include sugar alcohols.
Pure Monk Fruit Extract (Luo Han Guo)
A zero-calorie natural sweetener that doesn’t spike blood sugar.
Contains mogrosides, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Be cautious of blends that mix monk fruit with other additives—opt for pure extract.
Date Sugar / Date Syrup / Whole Medjool Dates
Made from whole dried dates—rich in fiber, potassium, magnesium, and antioxidants.
Slower blood sugar impact thanks to fiber and whole-food matrix.
Tip: Use blended Medjool dates in smoothies, baking, or sauces.
Fresh Fruit & Unsweetened Dried Fruit
Nature’s original sweetener—fiber-rich and full of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients.
Great for sweetening smoothies, baking, raw treats, or pretty much anything.
Tip: Always check labels for “unsulfured” and “no added sugar”.
My Favorite Sweet Treats
Cutting refined sugar doesn’t mean you have to give up sweet treats entirely. In fact, there are so many delicious alternatives that I absolutely love and keep stocked in my fridge.
Medjool Dates Stuffed with Raw Nut Butter — This is the ultimate snack. I’ll slice open a soft, gooey medjool date and stuff it with raw almond butter or cashew butter. Add a sprinkle of sea salt or cinnamon if you want to elevate it even further. Think of it as nature’s caramel. I absolutely love Rancho Meladuco Dates and Gato Dates.
Honey Mama’s — These refrigerated raw cacao truffle bars are made with simple, nourishing ingredients like raw honey, coconut oil, and cacao powder. I love the Chocolate Cake and Peanut Butter Cup flavors most.
Spring & Mulberry — Their date-sweetened chocolate bars are truly luxurious—rich, smooth, and sweetened only with whole dates. Completely free from refined sugar and packed with flavor. Their Pecan Date bar is my favorite.
Meet The Source Bliss Balls — These bliss balls are the perfect blend of clean ingredients, adaptogens, and superfoods. Each flavor is thoughtfully made with nourishing ingredients and free from refined sugar—perfect for a quick treat.
Erewhon Chocolate — I love Erewhon’s in-house chocolate bars and cups. They’re crafted with high-quality ingredients and clean sweeteners, and they taste indulgent. The cups are like the elevated, ultra-clean version of my childhood favorites. By the way, Erewhon ships these chocolates nationwide (my apologies in advance for how much you may spend right now).
Elemental Superfood Crumble — This crumble is one of my absolute favorite clean snack staples. It’s a rich, crunchy, nutrient-dense superfood blend made with organic seeds, nuts, dried fruit, and adaptogens—free from gluten, dairy, soy, refined sugar, and preservatives. It tastes indulgent, but is packed with nourishing ingredients like sprouted sunflower seeds, Brazil nuts, chia seeds, cacao nibs, and raw honey.
These treats not only satisfy my sweet tooth, but they also support my body with real, whole ingredients.
Challenge: Go to your kitchen (or your grocery store) and check five nutrition labels.
How many grams of sugar are in each?
What types of sugar are listed in the ingredients?
How many different names for sugar can you spot?
