Struggling to feel rested, focused, and energized? Let’s talk sleep.
We glorify productivity, but true efficiency starts with deep, restorative sleep.
When I was in the corporate world in San Francisco and New York, I used to push through exhaustion, thinking that I could just "catch up" on sleep later. But , I quickly learned that quality sleep isn’t a luxury—it’s the foundation for absolutely everything: energy, focus, longevity, mood, metabolism, and even detoxification.
Yet, so many of us neglect it.
Why Sleep Matters More Than You Think
Everyone needs quality sleep to thrive, but how much? While 8–9 hours is the typical recommendation, sleep needs vary based on the individual and age.
Critical activities take place while we sleep:
Internal organs rest and recover
Tissues repair and muscles grow
Hormones regulate
Nutrients assimilate
Memory consolidates
Protein synthesis occur
Despite its importance, sleep deprivation is a massive issue today.
In 1942, Americans averaged 7.9 hours of sleep per night. By 2013, this dropped to 6.8 hours—a 13% decrease.
About 32.8% of U.S. adults report getting less than 7 hours of sleep per night.
21% of Americans struggle with sleep disorders (insomnia, sleep apnea, etc.), and these numbers are rising.
The Hidden Toll of Poor Sleep
Lack of sleep isn’t just about feeling tired.
It’s linked to nearly every physical and mental health issue plaguing us today:
Increased risk of chronic disease (heart disease, diabetes, etc.)
Cognitive impairment (brain fog, memory loss)
Mental health struggles (anxiety, depression)
Weakened immune function (getting sick often)
Increased cravings & overeating (leading to weight gain)
Hormonal imbalances (disrupting metabolism & mood)
Reduced productivity & performance (brain burnout)
In our fast-paced world, I see so many driven, hard-working, smart people sacrificing sleep just to keep up.
But, eventually, it catches up to you. Trust me.
Signs You Need to Re-Evaluate Your Sleep Habits
Constant fatigue no matter how much coffee you drink
Difficulty focusing and brain fog
Waking up to a blaring alarm in deep sleep
Frequent illness or getting sick easily
Feeling irritable or anxious without clear cause
Personally, I love using my ŌURA to track my sleep and optimize my routines. It helps me see exactly where I need to improve, so I highly recommend it.
It also has a direct integration with Natural Cycles (MEGHAN15 at checkout for 15% off) — a user-friendly, accessible mobile app that gives you a natural and hormone-free (scientifically backed) method of contraception and fertility tracking, providing:
Fertility Tracking: You input various menstrual cycle data, and the app then utilizes this information to determine your fertility status and predict fertile and non-fertile days throughout your menstrual cycle.
Basal Body Temperature (BBT) Monitoring: By recording BBT daily with a thermometer provided by the app or through the Oura Ring integration, you can identify subtle shifts in temperature that indicate ovulation.
Ovulation Prediction: The app utilizes the recorded data to predict ovulation, which is typically marked by a slight increase in BBT. By identifying the fertile window leading up to ovulation, you can make informed decisions regarding contraception or conception.
Non-Hormonal Contraception Method: The app provides "green days" when the likelihood of conception is low, while "red days" indicate higher fertility and the need for alternative contraceptive methods.
(I’ll talk about menstrual and reproductive health in a dedicated post another time.)
Here’s How I’ve Optimized My Sleep (And How You Can Too)
MAKE SLEEP YOUR #1 PRIORITY
Without good sleep, every other health habit loses impact. No amount of supplements, workouts, salads, or green juices will override chronic sleep deprivation. Commit to making sleep non-negotiable, and you’ll feel the difference.
EAT LIGHTER AND EARLIER
A heavy dinner too close to bedtime really disrupts deep sleep. I eat earlier, sometimes as early as 4PM in the winter months (I’m not even kidding) since I go to bed before 9PM. An evening walk after dinner also supports digestion and helps signal to my body that it’s time to wind down.
ESTABLISH A CONSISTENT SLEEP-WAKE SCHEDULE
Going to bed and waking up at the same time daily (yes, even on weekends) keeps your circadian rhythm stable. I start winding down at 8PM and aim for lights out by 9PM, and I wake up naturally before sunrise without an alarm. I obviously may stay out or up late once in a while, but this is almost always an exception.
HAVE A WIND-DOWN ROUTINE
I dedicate 30–60 minutes before bed to relaxing activities like reading, down-regulative breathing techniques, meditating, and/or journaling. I also block social media apps as of 8PM (I use Opal) and avoid screens for at least an hour. If I need to use a device after 8PM, I enable a red light filter on my phone or wear blue-light blocking glasses. Check out Ra Optics, Bon Charge, or Felix Gray if you want to get yourself a pair.
CREATE A GOOD SLEEP ENVIRONMENT
Your bedroom should be:
Dark (blackout curtains or a sleep mask)
Quiet (earplugs or a white noise machine)
Cool (~68°F) for optimal melatonin production
Investing in comfortable bedding (I like Parachute Home) and eliminating blue light can dramatically improve your sleep quality.
PRO TIP: THE BEST MORNING ROUTINE STARTS THE NIGHT BEFORE.
Good sleep doesn’t just happen. Rather, it’s set up the night before.
Follow the 3-2-1 rule for better sleep:
No food 3 hours before bed
No liquids 2 hours before bed
No screens 1 hour before bed
Imagine Waking Up Energized Every Morning...

Sleep & Detox Connection
By the way, did you know your brain detoxes itself while you sleep?
Your glymphatic system (the brain’s waste-removal system!) is 10X (!!!) more active during deep sleep, clearing out toxins, heavy metals, and metabolic waste. Poor sleep translates to toxic buildup, brain fog, and inflammation.
This is why I emphasize deep sleep as part of the detox process. You can be eating the cleanest diet, but if you’re continuously sleep-deprived, your body can’t effectively repair and/or eliminate waste.
So, are you finally ready to cleanse and detox your body, transform your health, and upgrade your life?
