We don’t need cheaper drugs.
We need fewer people who need them.
President Trump recently signed an executive order urging pharmaceutical companies to lower drug prices to match those in other developed countries—what he calls “most favored nation” pricing.
It sets ambitious targets and threatens future tariffs or importation rules if companies don’t comply.
But, experts are already questioning how it can even be enforced.
The FTC has been directed to crack down on anti-competitive practices like delaying generic entry, and litigation is almost guaranteed if the administration tries to push real consequences.
Meanwhile, pharmaceutical stocks surged—because investors know that this likely won’t stick.
But, what if we didn’t need so many drugs in the first place?
We spend trillions treating chronic diseases that are often preventable—diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver disease, obesity, autoimmune disorders—and yet…
We subsidize corn, soy, and wheat.
Not vegetables.
Not fruit.
Not regenerative meat.
Not organic food.
We reward the processed food industry with subsidies and tax breaks.
Then, turn around and wonder why people are sick.
And then, we pay pharma billions to "fix" it.
Just imagine what would happen if we:
Shifted agricultural subsidies toward nutrient-dense, whole foods
Expanded SNAP to cover organic fruits and vegetables and high-quality animal protein
Required hospital systems and schools to serve nutrient-dense, whole-food-based meals—not ultra-processed junk food
Created tax incentives for local farms, not soda manufacturers
Made nutrition education a mandatory part of public health policy and medical school
Restricted marketing of ultra-processed food to children, similar to how we regulate tobacco and alcohol advertising
We don’t have a drug pricing problem.
We have a food system problem.
Of course, making medications more affordable definitely matters—especially for those with very urgent or chronic needs (i.e. Type 1 Diabetes).
But, if we truly want to lower healthcare costs in the long term, we also have to focus on preventing the upstream root causes of disease.
What do you think about this executive order mandating pharmaceutical companies to lower drug prices? Are there any other public health policies you would implement to move the needle in this country? Let me know in the comments.

Great proposals! My son has been in the hospital and I’ve been shocked at how terrible the food choices are. They’re feeding kids with cancer the most sugary, processed meals. So wild
