You don’t just have “bad digestion”.
If you’re dealing with gas, bloating, pressure, stomach distension, or that uncomfortable “food baby” feeling, even when you’re eating “clean”, this is for you.
And, before you assume:
it’s gluten
it’s dairy
it’s sugar
it’s seed oils
it’s fiber
it’s FODMAPs
it’s stress
or that this is “just how your body is”
Let me gently interrupt that narrative.
Gas and bloating are common, but not inevitable or something you have to accept as normal.
They are signals.
And most people are chasing the wrong fixes, trying every new elimination diet, “healing” protocol, supplement, probiotic, digestive enzyme, powder, gummy, drink mix, or peptide claiming to solve the root of the issue.
And, trust me…I get it.
I lived with constipation, gas, bloating, and digestive discomfort in my 20s too.
But, nothing truly changed until I started addressing stagnation and clearing congestion at the system level.
Here are the 10 most common root causes I see in clients who’ve “tried everything” and are still struggling with bloating.
1. Gut Imbalances (Not Just “Sensitivity”)
Gas is fermentation.
Bloating is pressure from trapped gas, fluid, or inflammation.
That usually comes from microbial imbalance, not food intolerance alone.
Common contributors:
Candida / yeast overgrowth
H. pylori
Parasites
Pathogens
Opportunistic bacterial overgrowth (SIBO, dysbiosis)
Post-antibiotic gut disruption
When microbes ferment food before it’s properly digested, gas is essentially inevitable.
2. Constipation (Even If You Go “Every Day”)
This one is huge.
If you’re not having 1–3 complete, easy bowel movements per day, waste can back up.
And, when waste backs up:
gas literally has nowhere to go
toxins recirculate
fermentation increases
pressure builds
Bloating is often just delayed or incomplete elimination.
If toxins don’t leave through your bowels, they stay in your system, and your gut lets you know right away.
3. Sluggish Liver + Poor Bile Flow
Your liver and gallbladder are essential for digestion.
Without adequate bile:
fats don’t break down properly
food sits too long
gas forms
bloating follows
Here are some signs this may be an issue for you:
bloating after fatty meals
nausea
floating, sticky stools (yes — there’s too much fat!)
constipation
hormonal symptoms alongside digestion issues
This is why digestion cannot be separated from detoxification.
4. A Stagnant Lymphatic System
The lymphatic system drains fluid, waste, and inflammation.
When it’s stagnant:
fluid retention increases
abdominal pressure builds
bloating worsens
This is why movement, sweating, breathwork, and drainage matter just as much as food.
You cannot supplement your way out of stagnation.
5. An Overwhelming Toxic Load
Your gut is directly affected by:
Heavy metals
Mold + mycotoxins
Pesticides + herbicides
Plastics + endocrine disruptors
Environmental chemicals
Poor indoor and outdoor air quality
Contaminated drinking + shower water
EMFs + chronic oxidative stress
Synthetic fragrances
Household cleaning chemicals
Personal care + beauty products containing hormone-disrupting ingredients
These irritate the gut lining, disrupt the microbiome, and impair digestion.
Gas and bloating are often early warning signs that your detox pathways are under strain and overwhelmed.
6. Food Intolerances + Sensitivities
Sometimes bloating is triggered by specific foods, not because those foods are “bad”, but because your body isn’t able to digest them efficiently right now.
When the gut is inflamed, imbalanced, or overloaded, even healthy foods can ferment or irritate the system, leading to gas, bloating, and discomfort. This is why people often say, “I eat clean, but everything makes me bloated.”
Food sensitivities are usually a downstream symptom, not the root cause.
They often point to gut imbalance, poor digestion + gut motility, inflammation, or a toxic load that needs to be cleared.
When digestion and detox pathways are properly supported, many people can tolerate foods they once reacted to.
7. Chronic Stress
You can be eating all the “right” foods and still feel bloated if your nervous system is chronically stressed.
Digestion works best when your body is in a calm, parasympathetic (“rest-and-digest”) state.
Ongoing chronic stress shifts the body into fight-or-flight, reducing stomach acid, slowing gut motility, and impairing enzyme release. The result of this is that food sits longer than it should, ferments, and creates gas and pressure.
If your bloating worsens during busy seasons, emotionally intense periods, or when you’re constantly rushing, stress (not food!) may be the primary driver.
8. Eating Too Quickly (Without Chewing)
Digestion doesn’t start in the stomach. It starts in the mouth.
When you eat quickly, multitask during meals, or swallow food without chewing it thoroughly, your body doesn’t properly prepare for digestion.
Large, inadequately broken-down food particles are harder to process, increasing the likelihood of gas, bloating, and discomfort, especially later in the day.
Even very “clean” meals can cause bloating if they’re eaten too fast (or in overly large portions)
9. Eating Too Much Fiber Too Fast
Fiber is essential, but timing and pacing matter.
When someone rapidly increases fiber intake (especially during a detox, dietary reset, or plant-forward phase), the gut may not yet be equipped to handle the sudden increase. This can lead to bloating, pressure, and gas as the body begins moving and clearing out old, stagnant waste.
This is often why someone eats a big salad and immediately says, “Salads bloat me, so I can’t eat them.”
It’s usually not the vegetables themselves. It’s that the digestive system isn’t primed to process that much raw fiber all at once, especially if digestion, stomach acid, bile flow, or gut motility are already sluggish.
This doesn’t mean fiber is the problem. It means that the system needs a bit more time to adapt.
Gradual increases allow digestion, motility, and the microbiome to adjust without overwhelming the gut. In many cases, bloating here is temporary and improves as the body clears stagnation and becomes more efficient.
Sometimes bloating isn’t a sign that something is “wrong”, but rather a sign that things are finally moving.
10. Low Stomach Acid (Hypochlorhydria)
This one is wildly overlooked.
Stomach acid is what starts digestion.
When it’s low:
protein doesn’t break down properly
food sits too long in the stomach
bacteria + pathogens survive when they shouldn’t
fermentation increases downstream
Gas and bloating often aren’t from too much acid.
Rather, they’re from too little.
Common drivers of low stomach acid include:
chronic stress
long-term antacid or PPI use
under-eating or long gaps between meals
mineral deficiencies (especially zinc)
years of “gentle” eating without rebuilding digestive capacity
Low stomach acid creates a cascade effect: poor protein digestion → microbial overgrowth → sluggish motility → bloating.
This is why many people feel worse adding probiotics or fiber before restoring proper digestion upstream.
Why “Healthy Diets” Still Leave People Bloated
You can literally at the cleanest diet imaginable and still experience both gas + bloating regularly if your body can’t eliminate efficiently.
And, that’s because digestion isn’t just about what you eat.
It’s about:
how well you break it down
how efficiently you eliminate
whether waste + toxins exit or recirculate
Inputs matter, but outputs matter way more.
That means:
opening elimination pathways
supporting the colon first
supporting the liver second
addressing microbial imbalances (parasites, yeast/candida, bacterial overgrowth, dysbiosis) when appropriate
addressing mold and heavy metals later
restoring lymphatic movement
When the body can clear waste, gas resolves naturally.
Just remember that gas and bloating aren’t random.
Rather, they’re signals from your body.
And, once you listen and respond correctly, digestion becomes calm, quiet, and effortless again.
