Before we dive in, if you want a real read on what your gut is actually telling you, take my free Gut Health Diagnostic before reading. It takes 2 minutes and will make everything below much more personal.
One of the most common things I hear in my work is:
“I eat so clean, but I’m still constipated.”
Big salads, smoothies, fiber, hydration, supplements, digestive enzymes…
And yet…the body still isn’t letting go.
This is where people get veryyyy confused.
Because constipation is rarely just about food quality or not having enough fiber.
You can be eating the cleanest, most nutrient-dense diet imaginable and still feel:
backed up
bloated
gassy
heavy
inflamed
uncomfortable in your own body
And, that’s because constipation is often less about what’s going in and more about what isn’t coming out.
The digestive system is one of the body’s largest elimination and detox pathways. It’s responsible for processing waste, moving toxins out of the body, and giving you one of the clearest daily snapshots of your internal terrain.
Your bowel movements tell you so much:
how fast food is moving through the colon
whether your microbiome is balanced
whether bile flow is adequate
whether your nervous system is affecting motility
whether your detox pathways are congested
This is why your stool is one of the most powerful biofeedback tools you have.
The Bristol Stool Chart helps us understand what healthy elimination actually looks like.
Types 3 and 4 are ideal.
In a well-functioning body, you should ideally:
go 2–3 times per day
eliminate with ease
avoid straining or pain
have complete, satisfying bowel movements
barely need any wiping
not regularly deal with bloating, gas, or stomach distension
If you’re eating multiple meals and only eliminating once every day or every other day, your transit time is likely too slow.
And, if waste isn’t moving through the colon efficiently, it doesn’t just sit there harmlessly.
It ferments, creates gas, recirculates toxins, and increases inflammation.
And often, it starts showing up far beyond digestion:
skin issues
hormone symptoms
brain fog
bloating
fatigue
This is why constipation is never just about constipation.
It’s a systems issue.
So, let me break down the real reasons clean eaters still struggle with constipation, and what actually moves the needle.
If that sounds like you, keep reading.
1. Sluggish Gut Motility
Sometimes the food is fine. But, the movement isn’t.
Chronic stress, severe under-eating, low stomach acid, mineral deficiencies, and sedentary habits can all slow motility.
The result is that food sits too long → fermentation → bloating → constipation.
When waste lingers in the gut longer than it should, it creates pressure, gas, discomfort, and that heavy “stuck” feeling so many people normalize.
Over time, sluggish motility starts to impact everything from energy and skin to hormone balance and overall detox capacity.
2. Too Much Fiber Too Fast
This is one of the biggest reasons people say:
“Salads make me bloated.”
Fiber isn’t the problem.
A sluggish system plus a high fiber load is.
Raw vegetables, smoothies, seeds, and detox foods can overwhelm a colon that’s already backed up.
Sometimes the answer is less raw, more movement first.
3. Sluggish Liver + Poor Bile Flow
Bile is one of the body’s natural lubricants.
It helps:
move waste through the gut
break down fats
stimulate motility
Without adequate bile flow:
stools become dry
transit slows
constipation worsens
hormones recirculate
This is why constipation and hormone symptoms so often travel together.
4. Chronic Stress + Nervous System Dysregulation
You can eat perfectly and still stay constipated if your body is living in fight-or-flight.
Digestion requires parasympathetic tone.
If your system is constantly:
rushing
anxious
overstimulated
multitasking
motility slows dramatically.
The colon listens to the nervous system.
5. Toxic Load + Stagnation
This is the part most people miss.
Heavy metals
Mold and mycotoxins
Pesticides and herbicides
Plastics and endocrine disruptors
Environmental chemicals
Poor indoor and outdoor air quality
Contaminated drinking and shower water
EMFs and chronic oxidative stress
Synthetic fragrances
Household cleaning chemicals
Personal care and beauty products containing hormone-disrupting ingredients
All of these exposures create physiological burden.
When detox pathways become congested, the body slows elimination.
Constipation is frequently one of the first signs of systemic stagnation.
This is why opening drainage pathways matters before doing any deeper detox work.
6. Low Stomach Acid
This one is wildly (!!!) overlooked.
Digestion starts in the stomach, not the colon.
Stomach acid helps break down protein, trigger enzymes, support bile flow, and keep food moving efficiently.
When it’s low, food sits too long, ferments, and creates a downstream cascade:
poor digestion → microbial imbalance → sluggish motility → constipation
This is why so many people feel worse after:
salads
smoothies
protein-heavy meals
high-fiber foods
The issue isn’t always the food.
Sometimes, the stomach just simply isn’t primed to digest it properly.
Chronic stress, long-term dieting, mineral depletion, and antacid use are some of the most common drivers.
So, the question isn’t:
“Why am I constipated if I eat clean?”
The better question is:
“How efficiently is my body actually eliminating?”
Because health isn’t just about clean inputs.
It’s about clear outputs.
And, when the body can eliminate efficiently, so many things improve:
bloating
skin
hormones
energy
mental clarity
The body starts feeling lighter because it literally is.
If you’ve been eating clean but still feel backed up, bloated, or heavy, your body may not need a stricter diet.
It may need better elimination support.
This is exactly why I teach: colon first, liver second, deeper detox third.
The order matters.
Take my free Gut Health Diagnostic if you want a real read on what your gut is actually telling you and the best next step for your situation.
If this resonated, I’d love to know: what does your elimination actually look like right now? Going less than once a day, bloating that builds as the day goes on, straining or never feeling complete, salads or smoothies making it worse, that heavy "stuck" feeling, or… all of the above? Let me know in the comments. I read and reply to every response.
And, if you’re ready to address the actual terrain rather than layer more inputs onto a system that hasn’t been cleared, I’m currently taking a very limited number of new 1:1 coaching clients. Book a consultation here.

Yeah, and sometimes people are constipated because they are so focused on eating “clean” that they end up stressed out and eating way below their calorie needs. That’s why balance and the right guidance are important.
this is actually really eye-opening, i never thought elimination mattered this much.
