News flash: Your blood glucose isn’t high because you ate a piece of fruit.
It’s high because your body isn’t processing or utilizing glucose effectively.
Most people blame carbs.
But, the real issue is metabolic dysfunction.
How Glucose Is Supposed to Work
When you eat food, your blood sugar rises.
Your pancreas releases insulin, which acts like a key, unlocking your cells for you so that glucose can enter and be used for energy.
But, when your cells are inflamed, stressed, or burdened by toxins, they stop responding properly. That "key" doesn't work anymore.
The glucose stays outside the cell.
Insulin levels spike, trying to force it in.
Symptoms of Metabolic Inflexibility or Insulin Resistance
If your body isn’t switching efficiently between fuel sources or responding well to insulin, you might notice symptoms like:
Persistent fatigue or afternoon energy crashes
Brain fog or poor concentration
Intense sugar or carb cravings
Belly fat that just won’t budge
Bloating or sluggish digestion
Trouble sleeping or waking up groggy
Skin issues like acne or dullness
Hormonal imbalances (irregular periods, PMS, low libido)
PCOS (up to 70% of women with PCOS have insulin resistance)
Mood swings, anxiety, or irritability
Blood sugar highs and lows (shaky or hangry between meals)
These are signs that your metabolism is stuck and that your cells are struggling to use energy properly.
What Breaks This System Down?
This isn’t just about sugar.
It’s actually about what’s happening on a cellular level:
Mitochondrial dysfunction — Your cells lack the energy to burn fuel efficiently.
Chronic inflammation — Inflammatory messengers interfere with insulin signaling.
Hormonal imbalances — Especially cortisol, estrogen, and thyroid hormones.
Poor beta-oxidation — The body struggles to burn fat for energy and becomes overly reliant on glucose.
Cellular insulin resistance — The door is locked, and glucose can’t get in.
This is how someone can have high blood sugar even while eating clean.
It’s not because of a sweet potato or a piece of fruit (trust me).
It’s because their cells are in survival mode.
Why Metabolic Flexibility Matters
Your body should be able to switch between burning carbs and burning fat depending on what you eat and what you need.
That’s something called metabolic flexibility.
When you’re metabolically inflexible, your body is stuck in glucose-dependency mode.
You get energy crashes, constant cravings, mood swings, and fat storage.
You can think of it like a hybrid car stuck in electric mode with a dying battery.
Detox Is the Missing Link
You can’t talk about insulin resistance without talking about detoxification.
Your liver regulates blood sugar and stores glucose.
Your colon eliminates metabolic waste and hormone byproducts.
Your lymph system clears inflammation from the body.
If those pathways are congested, your metabolism will suffer greatly.
You can eat clean and still be bloated, fatigued, or inflamed because your body is overwhelmed internally.
This is why I always say that healing metabolic dysfunction and insulin resistance starts with cellular cleansing and detoxification.
Should You Be Eating A High-Protein Breakfast?
This is a question I get very often.
Yes, protein‑rich breakfasts can help stabilize blood sugar in the short term, especially if you’re dealing with dysregulated glucose.
But, it’s worth zooming out to understand the deeper picture.
Blood sugar struggles aren’t just about carbs.
They’re a sign of deeper metabolic dysfunction — often rooted in a congested liver and insulin resistance.
The liver is one of the most critical organs for blood sugar regulation.
When it’s overburdened with toxins, stagnant bile, and excess fat, it can’t regulate glucose effectively — regardless of how much protein you eat at breakfast.
Fruit, when eaten alone in the morning, is cleansing, hydrating, enzymatic, and rich in natural glucose that a healthy metabolism can utilize efficiently.
If fruit causes a blood sugar spike when eaten on its own, it doesn’t mean that the fruit is the problem — it’s a signal that your body needs support and that there’s deeper healing to do.
High‑protein, high‑fat meals may flatten blood sugar curves in the short term, but over time they can:
Slow digestion
Increase the metabolic load
Burden the liver more
Exacerbate insulin resistance more
So while a protein‑forward breakfast might “look” good on a glucose graph today, it doesn’t necessarily support long‑term cellular detoxification or metabolic flexibility.
I recommend quick-exit foods in the morning because they support the body’s natural morning detox cycle, improve elimination, and give your liver a chance to clear waste before introducing heavier foods.
So, What’s the Solution?
Again, the solution isn’t cutting out fresh seasonal fruit or demonizing carbohydrate-rich whole foods like sweet potatoes, potatoes, and quinoa.
Rather, the solution is actually restoring your body’s ability to respond appropriately to insulin and switch between fuel sources.
That means:
Supporting mitochondrial (cellular) function
Clearing toxic overload and inflammation
Regulating hormones
Rebuilding metabolic flexibility
Regaining insulin sensitivity

Love this message! I always thought I always needed high protein high fat meals with fewer carbs to combat the pre-diabetes that runs in my family… but once I actually started incorporating more detox protocols into my days and supporting my internal health I was able to thrive on so so many more carbs, and feel great from it!!
Carbs aren’t the enemy, thank you for giving them some credit 🤍
