Before we dive in, if you want to understand where your menstrual cycle health stands right now, take my free Cycle Audit before reading. It takes 2 minutes and will make everything below much more personal.
You don’t just have “bad periods”.
If you’re dealing with painful cramps, heavy bleeding, clotting, irregular cycles, mood swings, fatigue, headaches, cystic acne, bloating, anxiety, or feeling completely wiped out around your cycle, even though you’re eating “healthy” and doing “all the right things”, this is for you.
And, before you assume that this is “just hormones” or “just how your body is”, it’s realllllly not.
Painful, heavy, or disruptive periods are common, but they are not inevitable, and they are not something you have to accept as normal.
They are signals that your body is giving you.
And, most people are chasing the wrong fixes…trying every new hormone supplement or tincture, seed cycling protocol, birth control pill, progesterone cream, herbal blend, adaptogen, cycle-syncing app, or TikTok or IG trend claiming to “balance hormones”.
It’s exhausting.
And trust me… I get it.
I lived with painful periods, cystic hormonal acne, mood swings, and cycle-related exhaustion for years too.
I had a Mirena IUD that completely and utterly destroyed my hormones. (I don’t wish this upon anyone.)
Nothing truly changed until I stopped trying to “balance hormones” in isolation and started clearing congestion and toxic overload at the system level.
Here are the 10 most common root causes I see in clients who’ve “tried everything” and are still struggling with their periods.
1. Estrogen Isn’t the Problem (Poor Estrogen Clearance Is)
Most period issues aren’t from “too much estrogen”.
They’re from estrogen that isn’t being properly metabolized and eliminated.
When estrogen isn’t cleared efficiently:
it recirculates
it irritates tissue
it drives inflammation
cramps worsen
bleeding gets heavier
mood symptoms intensify
This is why periods hurt.
Excess estrogen needs a proper exit pathway.
2. Constipation (Even If You Go “Every Day”)
This is one of the biggest missed links, by far.
Estrogen is eliminated through the bowels.
If you’re constipated, experiencing slow motility, or having strained, incomplete bowel movements, estrogen gets reabsorbed back into circulation.
That can show up as:
heavy or painful periods
breast tenderness
PMS
headaches or migraines
cystic acne
You cannot fix your hormones without fixing your elimination.
I’ve seen so many clients experience dramatic improvements in their menstrual cycles simply by resolving elimination issues.
3. A Sluggish, Overburdened Liver
Your liver processes hormones before they even leave your body.
If liver detox pathways are sluggish (which they most likely are if you live in today’s modern world):
estrogen clearance slows
hormone metabolites become inflammatory
periods become heavier + more painful
PMS worsens dramatically
Here are some common signs this may be an issue for you:
headaches around your cycle
nausea
acne along the jawline and chin
fatigue before or during your period
bloating + hormone symptoms together
Hormones and detox are completely inseparable.
4. Chronic Inflammation (Often Hidden)
Inflammation makes periods hurt.
It increases prostaglandins, which are the compounds that drive uterine contractions and pain.
Common inflammatory drivers include:
gut imbalances
toxic exposures
blood sugar dysregulation
unresolved infections
chronic stress
Painful periods are often just an inflammatory signal.
5. An Overwhelming Toxic Load
Your hormones are extremely sensitive to toxins.
Endocrine disruptors include:
plastics
pesticides
PFAS
heavy metals
mold + mycotoxins
synthetic fragrances
conventional beauty + personal care products
conventional household cleaning products
These mimic estrogen, block receptors, and impair detox pathways, leading to:
cramps
heavy bleeding
cycle irregularity
mood swings
infertility concerns
Period symptoms are often an early warning sign that toxic burden is too high.
6. Gut Imbalances (Yes, I Said This Again)
Your gut helps regulate estrogen through the estrobolome.
When the gut is imbalanced:
estrogen metabolism is disrupted
hormone recycling increases
inflammation rises
Common contributors may include:
dysbiosis
SIBO
parasites
yeast + candida
post-antibiotic gut disruption
You cannot separate hormone health from gut health.
7. Blood Sugar Dysregulation
Even subtle blood sugar swings impact hormones (yes…big time).
Low blood sugar leads to cortisol spikes.
Then, cortisol spikes lead to progesterone suppression.
Then, low progesterone leads to worse PMS + cramps.
Here are a few signs this may be at play:
cravings
irritability
anxiety before your period
waking at night
energy crashes
Hormone balance requires metabolic stability.
8. Chronic Stress + Nervous System Dysregulation
I think we all know that hormones don’t regulate well in survival mode.
Chronic stress:
diverts resources away from reproduction
suppresses ovulation
lowers progesterone
increases inflammation
If your periods worsen during busy, emotionally intense, or highly demanding seasons, stress may be the primary driver.
9. Mineral Deficiencies
Minerals matter wayyy more than most people realize.
Low magnesium, zinc, iron, or iodine can contribute to:
cramps
clotting
fatigue
heavy bleeding
irregular cycles
Years of stress, under-eating, restrictive diets, or gut issues often deplete these quietly.
10. Suppressing Symptoms Instead of Restoring Flow
Many people are taught to:
suppress cycles
override symptoms
numb pain
But, periods improve when you:
improve elimination
reduce inflammation
clear toxins
support liver + gut health
regulate the nervous system
When your body can process and clear efficiently, your cycles will become calmer, lighter, and more predictable.
Why You Can Be “Healthy” And Still Have Horrible Periods
You can eat whole foods, exercise, meditate, sleep well, take supplements, and do allllll the right things, but meanwhile still have miserable periods if your body can’t eliminate and regulate efficiently.
Hormones aren’t just broken out of nowhere.
That’s crazy!
They’re responding to:
congestion
toxic overload
inflammation
stress
poor clearance
Inputs matter, but outputs matter more.
When waste and hormones leave the body properly, periods change for the better.
